Ecuador’s Key Oil Pipeline Restarts After Major Spill Disrupts Exports and Communities

Ecuador’s state oil company, Petroecuador, has restarted the country’s most important oil pipeline, called SOTE, after a landslide broke it and caused a large oil spill.

The pipeline was shut down for six days after the break happened on June 16, 2025. SOTE normally carries up to 360,000 barrels of oil each day, making it vital for Ecuador’s economy and fuel supply.

The landslide pushed the pipeline about 20 meters sideways and buried it under a huge amount of dirt. Petroecuador’s teams dug out the pipeline and fixed the damage so they could start pumping oil again.

The company also fixed a smaller fuel line that was damaged in the same area. The oil spill was serious. Official reports say more than 25,000 barrels of crude oil leaked out.

The oil spread into three rivers, nine beaches, and about 300 hectares of farmland in the province of Esmeraldas. At least 5,300 people were directly affected. Many lost access to clean water, and fishing and farming were badly hit.

To stop the oil from spreading further, Petroecuador and government workers set up barriers and cleaned up the water and land. They have recovered about 13,800 barrels of oil mixed with water so far.

Ecuador Oil Spill Spurs Emergency Response

The company has set aside $4 million for this emergency work, including cleaning beaches, monitoring the area, and helping families who lost their income. The spill has caused big problems for the environment.

Oil covered more than 80 kilometers of river, killing fish and harming wildlife. The oil reached protected mangrove areas where hundreds of animal species live. Experts say it could take years for the rivers and wildlife to recover.

The SOTE shutdown also hurt Ecuador’s oil exports, which are a main source of money for the country. While another pipeline kept moving some oil, the break in SOTE forced Ecuador to delay some shipments and use oil reserves for local fuel needs.

Petroecuador says it will keep cleaning up the area and helping affected communities. The government is working with the company to fix the damage and prevent future problems.
