Congress Overrides Bolsonaro’s Veto, Creates Extra Spending of R$20.1 Billion per Year
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Congress overrode President Jair Bolsonaro’s veto on Wednesday, March 11th, and decided to expand the group of people who are entitled to social assistance through the BPC (Continuous Cash Benefit).
Under current law, elderly (those over age 65) and disabled people whose per person family income is less than one fourth of the minimum salary, or R$261.25, are entitled to the benefit. Under the new law, the income ceiling for receiving the benefit has been doubled, which will greatly increase the number of recipients.
According to government estimates, overriding the veto will cost the federal coffers an extra R$20.1 billion per year.
