China’s August Data Show an Economy Losing Steam, But Not Its Balance

China’s latest economic readings tell a tale of slowing momentum and lingering uncertainty. The numbers released Sunday cover everything from housing to shopping habits, and together they reveal a country still growing, but more cautiously than markets had hoped.

The headline: housing prices fell again, down 2.5% year-on-year in August. That’s a smaller drop than July’s 2.8%, but still marks a prolonged slump in the property market, once the backbone of household wealth.

For families, it means apartments feel less like assets and more like burdens. For developers and local governments, it signals tighter cash flow and fewer land sales.

Investment, usually Beijing’s go-to growth engine, nearly stalled. Fixed-asset spending rose just 0.5%, well short of expectations. Cranes slowed, projects paused, and private businesses hesitated to commit to expansion.

The slowdown in industrial production confirmed the pattern: output grew 5.2% versus 5.7% in July, pointing to softer global demand and domestic caution.

Retail sales showed the same hesitancy. Growth slowed to 3.4% from 3.7% the month before. Shoppers are holding back, and the unemployment rate — up slightly to 5.3% — explains why.

Without job security, consumer confidence is fragile, especially among younger workers. The story behind the numbers is one of transition and tension. China is still expanding — just not at the pace needed to reassure investors or households.

The property market’s long decline continues to weigh on confidence, and traditional growth drivers like exports and construction are no longer firing in sync.

That leaves policymakers with a delicate choice: ease more aggressively, or risk letting confidence slip further. For the world, the message is equally clear. China is not collapsing, but neither is it pulling the global economy forward with the force it once did.
