Chilean Peso Slides as Dollar Strength, Copper Concerns, and Technicals Combine

The Chilean peso continued its slide against the US dollar, anchoring itself above 971 per dollar on July 30, according to official price charts.

Data throughout the last 24 hours confirm an environment characterized by persistent dollar strength, shifting commodity dynamics, and classic technical signals recognized by global traders.

The US dollar index extended its winning streak, buoyed by positive American economic data and easing fears of recession. Official exchanges credited rising US growth projections and lower trade friction with Europe as reasons for the dollar’s broad appeal.

As a result, capital flowed from emerging markets toward dollar-based assets, pressuring currencies like the peso. Analysts watching the peso noted that Chile’s reliance on copper exports currently weighs on sentiment.

The imminent 50 percent US tariff on copper, taking effect August 1, introduced a wave of unease among exporters and investors. Official trade data described stable recent copper shipment volumes, but policy uncertainty is now overshadowing the peso’s prospects.

No significant new inflows into peso-denominated ETFs appeared in the session, reinforcing the cautious tone. Technical analysis using standardized indicators from official chart data underscores the dollar’s dominance.

On both daily and four-hour charts, the USD/CLP pair stayed firmly above major moving averages—such as the 50, 100, and 200 period lines—signaling a solid uptrend.

The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) showed bullish momentum, maintaining a clear upward separation from its signal line.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) hovered near 68 on the four-hour chart and 62 on the daily, both reflecting substantial buying without a clear sign of overbought extremes.

Bollinger Bands expanded through the session, indicating rising volatility as buyers pushed prices toward the upper band. No reversal signals appeared. Price levels above 960 acted as short-term support, while resistance faded above 970, validating the upward move.

The Global Liquidity Index line in yellow on the chart pointed to sustained but unremarkable global market liquidity conditions.

Its consistency suggested that changes in peso valuation stemmed more from local drivers and dollar performance than abrupt liquidity shifts. Trading volumes remained steady, with official data indicating no surge that might hint at panic or exuberance.

No market maker quotes or statements appeared overnight, but the consensus interpretation was clear: a strong dollar, trade friction fears, and solid technicals kept the peso under pressure.

Overnight and into the morning, the Chilean peso’s story unfolded as robust US growth hopes collided with trade policy risks and technical momentum. The facts show a currency reacting rationally to fundamentals and clear technical signals, not speculative hype or rumor.
