Buenos Aires announces start of Covid-19 vaccination process for people over age 50

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The city of Buenos Aires started this Tuesday, June 8, the vaccination process for people over 50 years of age, with the opening of the register where those interested can sign up and request an appointment to receive the first dose of the vaccine, informed the Buenos Aires Minister of Health, Fernán Quirós.

“We continue to expand the age range to access vaccination against Covid-19. From now on, people over 50 years of age can register to receive an appointment for the application of the first dose of the vaccine,” the minister posted on his Twitter profile, along with the link to access the digital portal where registration can be done.

Quirós appeared today at a press conference to explain this process and stressed that the capital authorities intend to “intensify the vaccination to all people over 50 years old living in the city, regardless of their condition or profession”.

According to the latest official data, 1.82 million doses were applied in the city, divided between health and strategic personnel, people at risk, and people over 60. A total of 999,967 people received at least one dose, and 283,884 people have the two doses required for full immunization.

Argentina has been going through the second wave of the pandemic for months, which left record numbers of infections and deaths. However, in some jurisdictions, such as the capital, the upward trend is beginning to reverse. According to the Minister’s data, there is already a decrease in the rate of infections.

“This week’s decrease intensified the decline we have been experiencing”, Quirós pointed out, although he added that “it is not enough yet”.

The authorities are evaluating the contagions and their impact on the occupation of intensive care beds, where they expect there to be a correlation with the decrease in the number of cases. “We hope that this week and next week the occupancy curve of intensive care beds will begin to fall,” the minister concluded.
