Brazilian state capitals of Curitiba, Goiânia and Salvador will receive 5G on Tuesday

Starting today (16), the 5G mobile network will be launched in Curitiba (Paraná), Goiânia (Goiás) and Salvador (Bahia). The decision to activate the 5G signal was made yesterday (15) by the Group for Monitoring the Implementation of Solutions to Interference Problems (Gaispi), which is linked to the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) and is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the new technology.

According to Gaispi’s assessment, these capitals have met the minimum requirements necessary to clear the 3.5 GHz band, such as conducting preliminary tests to identify and address the possibility that the 5G signal will interfere with the reception of home satellite dishes or even professional systems, such as satellite signals on adjacent frequencies.

With this decision, the capital cities of Brasília, Belo Horizonte, João Pessoa, Porto Alegre and São Paulo follow suit.

Anatel expects the 5G signal to arrive in the cities of Florianópolis (Santa Catarina), Palmas (Tocatins), Rio de Janeiro and Vitória (Espirito Santo) by August 29.

Under the rules of the 5G concession decree, mobile operators that have acquired lots in the 3.5 GHz band must meet the first requirement of 5G coverage by September 29: the installation of at least one 5G antenna per 100,000 inhabitants in Brazilian capitals.

Last week, Anatel decided to change the timeline for 5G activation in Brazil. In 15 capitals, the deadline will be extended by up to two months due to delays in importing the equipment needed to install 5G Internet.

Originally, the technology was to be available by the end of September in Recife, Fortaleza, Natal, Aracaju, Maceió, Teresina, São Luís, Campo Grande, Cuiabá, Porto Velho, Rio Branco, Macapá, Boa Vista, Manaus and Belém.

Anatel’s group responsible for the rollout of the technology decided to extend the deadline. Anatel’s consultant, Moisés Moreira, explains that the imported equipment will avoid interference with satellite services.

The forecast is that 5G will be available in these 15 capitals by November 27. According to Anatel, the signal could be available earlier. Everything depends on the arrival and installation of the necessary equipment.
