Brazil’s Real Holds Gains As Geopolitics Fades And Data Weighs On Dollar

Key Points

  1. USD/BRL held near 5.41 Tuesday morning after Monday’s close at 5.4055 (−0.37%).
  2. Soft U.S. data, a weaker DXY, and firm metals offset Venezuela risk in early trade.
  3. 4H momentum is oversold near 5.40; 5.47 is the first level bulls need back on a daily close.

The dollar’s knee-jerk bid after the U.S. intervention in Venezuela faded quickly. USD/BRL ended Monday at 5.4055 and opened Tuesday near 5.41. Early quotes were around 5.4099, with a range near 5.3952–5.4535. A TradingView print at 07:21 UTC showed 5.4073.

Geopolitics remains the headline risk. Washington said it would stay in Venezuela until a transition and signaled interest in Venezuelan oil investment. FX traders, however, treated the shock as “containment-dependent.”

One widely shared take from Mizuho in Tokyo was blunt: Venezuela is too small to move global markets directly, and any oil output recovery would take years. That view helped cap sustained safe-haven dollar demand overnight.

Macro drivers did the heavier lifting. The U.S. ISM manufacturing PMI fell to 47.9 in December from 48.2, underscoring ongoing contraction. The DXY index stayed soft around 98.2 into Tuesday morning.

Risk appetite held, with Asian equities still near record highs. Commodities were supportive: copper traded near records on supply concerns, and gold stayed close to recent peaks.

Brazil’s domestic backdrop was steady. The first Focus survey of 2026 nudged the 2026 inflation median to 4.06%, kept the Selic projection at 12.25%, and held the end-2026 FX estimate at 5.50.

Flow gauges leaned against a crowded long-dollar trade: EWZ logged net inflows of about $94.44 million (5 days) and $2.14 billion (1 year), while UUP showed outflows of about $59.07 million (1 month) and $169.67 million (1 year).

In local derivatives, the mini-dollar contract showed roughly 2,184,871 traded, and the central bank rolled over currency swaps via an auction of 50,000 contracts.

Technicals now look stretched. On 4H, RSI sat near 29 and MACD stayed negative but less aggressive. On 1D, RSI was in the low-40s.

Support sits at 5.40–5.41, then 5.37–5.38. Resistance is 5.44–5.45, then 5.47–5.49; a daily close above ~5.47 would be the first sign the pullback is ending.
