Brazil: US impasse pushes dollar and stock market down

In Ibovespa, the main index of the Brazilian Stock Exchange (B3), the instabilities coming from the foreign market pulled performance down on Monday, 22.

The indicator ended the week’s first session down 0.48%, at 110,000 points.

Investors are closely monitoring the unfolding of the United States debt ceiling, which is still under negotiation.

The market also awaits the vote on the new fiscal framework, expected to happen this week.

The week tends to be decisive in the negotiations involving the North American government because, within ten days, the US National Treasury should start running out of money to continue running the public machine.

This is one of the worst possible scenarios among market agents since a default like this would have the capacity to affect the entire global economy.

On the domestic front, the Focus Bulletin showed that economists cut their projections for inflation in 2023 and raised their estimates for the growth of the Brazilian economy.

The figures for the Gross Domestic Product, which is the sum of all goods and services produced in the country, went from a growth of 1.02% to 1.20% since the last survey.

Even so, according to Focus, the projections for the Selic rate remained stable at 12.5% for 2023.

The US Currency remained low against the Real during almost the entire session on Monday and ended the day depreciating 0.5%, quoted at R$4.97.

With this result, the dollar remained below R$5 for another day, as it had been happening since last week.
