Brazil Sets $400M for Amazon Safety

By · September 26, 2023 · 2 min read

Brazil will allocate $400 million to enhance security in the Amazon, according to Ricardo Capelli, Executive Secretary of the Justice Ministry.

The strategy will establish 34 new security outposts. A National Security Force command center and an international cooperation hub will also be set up.

Capelli remarked, “We are launching a bold plan called ‘Secure and Sovereign Amazon.'” This initiative includes 34 bases, with 28 on land and six on rivers.

He stressed the need for unified policies to battle rising organized crime rates.

“Organized crime ignores borders,” he stated. “We’re facing criminal acts not just in Brazil’s Amazon, but also in neighboring nations.”

It’s a collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank and Bahia’s government.

Background

This initiative marks a significant step for Brazil, often criticized for its Amazon policies. For years, the region has faced illegal logging and mining.

Moreover, this move comes amidst increasing international scrutiny. The Amazon plays a critical role in global climate balance, making its protection vital.

Historically, Brazil has struggled with enforcing regulations in the vast forest area.

This new funding could be a game-changer, fostering both environmental and territorial integrity.

Yet, the program’s success hinges on efficient implementation and international cooperation.

Only time will tell if this ambitious project will meet its goals and set a new standard for Amazon protection.

That is why Brazil will allocate $400 million to enhance security in the Amazon, according to Ricardo Capelli, Executive Secretary of the Justice Ministry.
