RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil has surpassed 3.5 million confirmed Covid-19 cases. The number was disclosed in the Ministry of Health’s daily update yesterday, August 20th. In the past 24 hours, 45,323 new people have been infected. As a result, the total number of cumulative cases reached 3,501,975. On Wednesday, the panel had recorded 3,456,652 cumulative cases.

According to the report, the total number of deaths reached 112,304. There were 1,204 deaths added to the statistics between Wednesday and Thursday by the state Health Secretariats. On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health’s system had recorded 111,100 lives lost to Covid-19. There are a further 3,187 deaths under investigation.

The Ministry’s update also recorded 736,264 people under follow-up. The number of recovered patients has exceeded 75 percent, and counts 2,653,407 patients who no longer present symptoms of the disease and are considered “recovered”.

International comparison

Brazil ranks second in terms of cases and deaths. The leader is the United States, which, according to the Johns Hopkins University map, reached 5,565,928 infections and 174,051 deaths.

When the incidence (cases per one million inhabitants) and mortality (deaths per one million inhabitants) are considered, according to the Ministry of Health’s Epidemiological Bulletin released on Wednesday, Brazil ranks 8th, with rates of 2,722 and 98, respectively. The country climbed one place in the list of countries by mortality compared to last week, when it was ranked 9th.
