Brazil records 0.08% deflation, lowest consumer price variation for June since 2017
In June 2023, Brazil experienced a 0.08% decrease in prices, largely attributed to the decline in food prices.
The Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), which tracks changes in the cost of a set of consumer goods and services, registered an accumulated increase of 2.87% for the year and 3.16% over 12 months.
This marks the lowest IPCA variation for June since 2017, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
A notable decrease in the Food and Beverages category (-0.66%) significantly contributed to this deflation. Additionally, lower Transportation costs (-0.41%) played a role in reducing the index.

Other categories that recorded price drops include Household Goods (-0.42%) and Communication (-0.14%).
However, the Housing sector saw a 0.69% price increase primarily due to higher residential electricity costs (+1.43%), resulting from adjustments in several Brazilian cities.
The Health and Personal Care category reported a minor inflation of 0.11% in June, spurred by a 0.38% rise in health plan costs following a permissible adjustment of up to 9.63% by the National Social Security Agency (ANS).
Lastly, the Transportation group’s fall was influenced by lower prices for new (-2.76%) and used cars (-0.93%) and a 1.85% drop in fuel prices, with diesel, ethanol, vehicular gas, and gasoline all seeing reductions.
