Cuban government removes Energy Minister amid energy crisis

On Monday, October 17, the Cuban government announced the dismissal of the Cuban Minister of Energy and Mines, Liván Arronte, from his post in the context of the energy crisis and the constant blackouts that the Caribbean island has been suffering for months.

The Cuban regime has thus appointed Vicente de la O Levy as the new Minister of Energy and Mines.

At the same time, it has also decided to remove Lázaro Guerra, general director of the National Electrical Union, from his post, whose position will now be filled by Alfredo López Valdés, as reported by the Cuban news portal Cubadebate.

Dozens of people demonstrated in Havana, Cuba’s capital, against blackouts at the end of September, outages that worsened in the wake of Hurricane Ian, which displaced more than 50,000 people in the west and center of the island.

A month before the hurricane, Cuba’s dictatorship was forced to disconnect one of its largest power plants, a thermoelectric plant with the capacity to produce up to 200 megawatts (MW), due to a fire in the fuel tank in the city of Matanzas.

Cuba has been experiencing failures in its electricity supply for months, a situation that has worsened with this fire.

Given the situation, in August, a demonstration was also held in Santiago de Cuba, one of the largest cities on the island, in protest against the continuous blackouts and the difficult economic situation faced by the city.
