Cuba suffers nationwide power failure after hurricane

Cuba suffered a nationwide power outage as Hurricane Ian passed over the island, causing the electrical grid to collapse.

At around 6 pm Tuesday, the Cuban power line collapsed, leaving the entire country without electricity as weather conditions affected the infrastructure of the national company Unión Eléctrica (UNE), according to the organization itself in a communiqué.

The company acknowledged that it was a “complex process” that it hopes to resolve gradually.

According to the director of UNE, Lázaro Guerra, to Prensa Latina, the interruption occurred after the networks were affected in the country’s central region, where there was a blackout in four provinces that later led to a nationwide outage.

However, Ian has moved across the southeastern Gulf of Mexico and is slowly leaving Cuba with winds of up to 195 kilometers per hour north of Bahia Honda, in the island’s center.

The hurricane was classified as a category three hurricane on a scale of five.
