According to a recent Ipsos survey, 60% of respondents in Brazil reported witnessing or hearing about drug-related crimes in their localities within the past year.

Conducted across 29 countries, Brazil ranked third in terms of perception of such crimes, trailing Thailand and Chile, who each reported 66%.

The global average stands at 29%.

Furthermore, 72% of Brazilian participants confirmed witnessing illicit drug use in their local areas, compared to the global average of 50%. Other crime aspects were also surveyed:

  • Muggings: 53% of Brazilian respondents reported witnessing or hearing about incidents, compared to the global average of 45%.
  • Violence against women: 63% were aware of such occurrences within their localities, compared to a global average of 40%.

Despite the high crime perception rates, an Ipsos representative highlighted that most respondents did not rank crime reduction as the government’s top priority, favoring job creation and economic growth instead.

The survey, conducted from March 24 to April 7, 2023, involved 23,039 participants globally, with a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points for Brazil.
