Official Number of New Coronavirus Cases in Brazil Rises to 77

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The number of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) has climbed to 77 in the latest update from the Ministry of Health, released yesterday afternoon, March 12th. In the balance announced in the morning, the total number of infected people was 60.

The increase occurred mainly in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the focus states of the virus in the country. In the first, confirmed cases increased from 30 to 42 between today’s two assessments. In Rio, the increase was from 13 to 16.

Paraná has now been included in the state-by-state statistics with six cases, while Pernambuco has identified two. Minas Gerais (one), Federal District (two), Rio Grande do Sul (four), Alagoas (one), Espírito Santo (one) have also confirmed cases.

The North Region is the only area in Brazil without confirmed cases. Roraima, Amapá and Tocantins have had no confirmed or suspected cases so far.

The number of suspected cases jumped from 930 to 1,422, an increase of 50 percent in less than a day. São Paulo also leads this group (704), followed by Minas Gerais (117), Federal District (82), Rio de Janeiro (76) and Santa Catarina (73).

The number of cases which did not test positive for the virus is now 2,662.
