Brazil’s Prosecutor General’s Office has requested the conviction of 40 individuals allegedly involved in Brasilia’s January 8 invasion of government buildings.

The request was presented to the Supreme Federal Court, which is examining the actions of those who allegedly targeted key governmental buildings in Brasilia.

Currently, 1,290 individuals are under review by the high court, facing various charges related to the event.

In this initial segment, the prosecution seeks conviction for 40 individuals on charges such as armed association, aggressive acts against the democratic state, and significant damage to federal property.

The culprits could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted on all charges, as per the Attorney General’s Office.

In their concluding statements, the prosecutors noted the organized nature of the group’s actions and the inadequate response from the Brasilia police.

Some of the accused are believed to be supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) and had called on the military to intervene.

One of the primary individuals under investigation is Bolsonaro’s former Justice Minister, Anderson Torres, who is currently under house arrest.

At the time of the incident, Torres was the Secretary of Security for Brasilia and is accused of facilitating the event by removing police presence.
