Brazil: parties advance in agreement for a single presidential candidacy

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The MDB, União Brasil, and PSDB met this Sunday night, March 13, in São Paulo, to advance an agreement that allows the parties to launch together a single candidate for the Presidency of the Republic in 2022.

Today, the three parties have pre-candidates: Simone Tebet (MDB), João Doria (PSDB), and Luciano Bivar (União Brasil). The president of União Brasil, Luciano Bivar, told the blog that the idea is not to form a federation but a big coalition.

Together, the three parties will have about R$2 billion (US$390 million) of public resources (electoral and party funds) to spend during the elections and, besides the national dispute, to invest in the expansion of federal seats.

João Doria is the current governor of São Paulo State.
