Among the world’s foremost aviation markets, Brazil was the only country to record an increase in domestic demand in July this year compared to the same month in 2019, before the pandemic.
The result was announced by the International Air Transport Association (Iata).
Brazilian domestic demand (measured in revenue per passenger kilometer, or RPK) increased by 1% in July compared to the pre-pandemic period.
Compared to 2021, the jump was 24%.
“In recent months, the country has shown a much faster growth rate than the other countries we monitor,” Dany Oliveira, Iata director for Brazil, told Valor Econômico newspaper.
In addition to solid demand, the Brazilian aviation market was spared severe problems such as staff shortages, airport overcrowding, and union strikes, mainly observed in the United States and Europe.
China recorded a 30% drop in demand in the world’s leading markets compared to the pre-pandemic period.
Other relevant markets include Australia (whose domestic demand fell 10% in July), India (-19%), Japan (-11%), and the United States (-8.4%).
Looking at all global markets, domestic demand in July this year was 13% below pre-pandemic levels.
