Brazil: Cachaça from São Paulo elected best in the world in international competition

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – With the cachaças Duas Madeiras Extra Premium, Cachaça Carvalho Americano 10 Anos, and Cachaça Cabaré Extra Premium, the Dom Tápparo Mill won all the Master awards of the category at The Global Spirits Masters 2022.

Produced in Mirassol, in the interior of São Paulo state, José Tápparo started making the distillate in 1978 for his own consumption and to give it as a gift to friends. Over the years, he began to sell the product. Today the production is run by the third generation of the family.

“The constant search for quality and innovation without losing tradition has marked our trajectory, so we are thrilled and grateful for this important award,” says Breno Tápparo, production director of the Dom Tápparo Mill.

With more than 800 million liters of cachaça produced annually, a third of which comes from small artisan distilleries, Brazil is advancing in exports to countries like the United States.

According to the IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, sales in the country have increased from 6,000 nine-liter boxes in 2005 to about 60,000 nine-liter boxes in 2021. Standard practice in distilleries with industrial-level production, exports have been increasingly practiced by artisanal or family producers, which has given them greater visibility abroad. Among the distilleries, the Dom Tápparo Mill has conquered the American and English markets with its cachaças.

The Cachaça Extra Premium Duas Madeiras, signed by Ademilson Tápparo, who is part of the second generation of the Tápparo family, is made with a blend of American Oak and Amburana, with a mixture of sweet and woody aromas, with vanilla, almonds, and chocolate. On the palate, it brings a sweet and citrusy taste. In addition, it causes a velvety, slightly alcoholic sensation in the mouth—a pleasant, moderate aftertaste.

Launched in 2008, The Global Spirits Masters evaluates and rewards excellence in spirits production. The judging is divided into 21 separate competitions to ensure that each category is judged by expert judges, chosen from among journalists, retail buyers, bartenders, and educators.

The competition awards gold and silver medals – with the “best spirits” (distilled spirits) being called Master. The “top spirit” in each category is designated as Taste Master.
