Bolivia Reinstates Mask Mandate in Schools Amid COVID-19 Spike

In response to a COVID-19 resurgence, the Bolivian government reinstated mandatory mask-wearing in schools and other strict health protocols starting in February.

This move aligns with the recent surge in cases, signaling the government’s proactive stance in curbing the spread of the virus.

During a press conference, Health and Sports Minister María Renée Castro outlined the Safety Protocol for Returning to Classes.

It mandates masks for students and ensures the availability of sanitizers and adequate handwashing facilities in schools.

Having ended its COVID-19 health emergency in August, Bolivia faces a new outbreak, particularly of the JN.1 subvariant, concentrated in the eastern regions.

Minister Castro reported an 80 percent surge in early 2024 infections compared to late 2023, breaking from past pandemic patterns with early-year outbreaks.

Are masks effective?

The efficacy of masks is a subject of debate.

Brazil’s Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) informed Anvisa in February 2022 that masks are ineffective against COVID-19, reported the Brasil Sem Medo outlet.

Citing scientific studies, the CFM argued that masks can block larger COVID-19 particles but are less effective against finer particles that remain airborne and travel distances.

According to other scientists the effectiveness depends on factors like type, fit, and consistent, correct usage.

While effective in controlled settings, real-world effectiveness can vary, leading to debates among scientists about the necessity of outdoor mask mandates.

Concerns about prolonged mask usage, such as skin irritation and social impact, particularly in children, are also part of the ongoing discourse.

Masks with valves are less effective in preventing the spread of the virus.

Researchers advocate for a layered pandemic control approach, combining masks with vaccinations, testing, and ventilation improvements.

The World Health Organization stresses the importance of integrating masks with other preventive measures.

As new COVID-19 variants emerge, the need for continued research and adaptation of mask policies becomes crucial to ensure their effectiveness in the changing landscape of the virus.
