Argentina, Mexico and Brazil prepare for the next G20 summit

The three Latin American partners of the Group of 20 (G20) —Mexico, Argentina and Brazil— will participate in the 17th summit of the main intergovernmental forum for economic and financial coordination that will take place in Bali, Indonesia, and will be focused on post-pandemic recovery.

Under the central motto Recover together, recover stronger, from November 15 to 16, Bali will receive representatives from the most industrialized countries that represent 85% of the world’s gross domestic product, including Argentina, Mexico and Brazil.

ARGENTINA’S PRIORITIES

The high-level meeting will be attended by the Argentine president, Alberto Fernández, who will travel accompanied by a delegation that has among its members the Argentine ambassador to the US, Jorge Arguello.

At the summit, the president is expected to speak about the aftermath of the pandemic as well as the global effects of the conflict in Ukraine and the sanctions on Russia by the West.

Alberto Fernández will try to position Argentina as a country rich in energy and food, which could adopt a role as a global supplier and respond to the needs of European countries.

Another point that the president could insist on is the establishment of a fairer system when it comes to loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), with whom Argentina has a million-dollar debt.

The president could request the revision of the surcharges applied by the IMF and the development of the Resilience and Sustainability Fund focused on vulnerable countries.
Absence of Bolsonaro and López Obrador

Representing Brazil, President Jair Bolsonaro will not attend, who is finishing his mandate and will be succeeded in his position by Luis Inacio Lula Da Silva as of January 1.

The main Latin American economy will be represented in Bali by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Bolsonaro Administration, Carlos França, who, in line with Argentina, will bet on positioning himself as an important supplier of food at the international level.

While the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, will give voice to the interests of his country at the summit on behalf of the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

For this country, addressing inflation and recovering economic growth in the context of the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine will be a priority.

Ebrard will refer in particular to the high interest rates established by banking entities, a policy that has been questioned by AMLO and that could lead to “an economic slowdown,” according to the foreign minister.
