Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli can win the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ title at the United States Grand Prix in Austin on Sunday, 25 October. He leads teammate George Russell by 102 points with five races left after Austin, so the title can be decided there only under one narrow scenario.

It is the latest development in our US Grand Prix 2026 coverage hub. Race start is 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time (3:00 p.m. Central Time in Austin).

Latest: US Grand Prix Weekend Opens in Austin

How Antonelli Can Clinch in Austin

Five races remain after Austin: Mexico City, São Paulo, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. No sprint races are left, so they are worth at most 125 points.

Antonelli therefore needs a lead of at least 125 points over every rival when the Austin race ends. A win adds 25 points to his tally, so Russell must finish ninth or lower, which scores 2 points or none.

Hamilton must also finish fifth or lower for the title to be settled on Sunday. If Russell finishes eighth or better, the title fight continues to Mexico City.

In plain English

  • Clinch: win the title with races still to run, because no rival can catch up on points.
  • Circuit of the Americas (COTA): the Austin, Texas track that has hosted this race since 2012.

Austin Weekend Schedule

The first practice session runs on Friday, 23 October, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. CDT). Second practice follows from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET (4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. CDT).

Third practice and qualifying are on Saturday, 24 October, with qualifying starting at 5:00 p.m. ET (4:00 p.m. CDT). The race covers 56 laps or a maximum of 120 minutes, according to the FIA competition documents.

Team News and Recent Form

Max Verstappen won the Singapore Grand Prix on 11 October, his first victory in Singapore. McLaren brings what it calls a modest selection of upgrades to Austin, aimed at braking reliability and performance, plus small floor changes to test.

The FIA timetable lists only routine Friday checks, including a medical-intervention exercise and safety-car testing. We found no report of a protest, penalty, investigation or safety warning linked to the event.

What Prediction Markets Say

Polymarket, a prediction market, prices Kimi Antonelli at 98.1% to win the 2026 drivers’ championship, with Max Verstappen at 1.4% (23 October 2026, 9:52 a.m. ET). Traders have wagered about US$204.6 million across the whole championship market.

Prices are bets, not polls. Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

What It Means for US Readers

A Mercedes driver could seal the world title on American soil this weekend. Viewers on the East Coast can watch the lights go out at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Even without a clinch, a Russell finish in the top eight keeps the title open for Mexico City. Our earlier coverage covers the Austin weekend opener and McLaren’s upgrade package.

What Is Not Known

No practice results from 23 October were available when we published. Any stewards’ decisions, penalties or technical checks issued on the day are also unknown.
