RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – While Christmas in Rio may seem lack-luster to some north-folk (if snow is required), there is no denying that New Year’s Eve is a BIG deal here. Rio takes all the best of the world-wide celebration, dresses it in white, and has every intention of partying on the beach until the sun comes up.
That’s not true of everyone in Brazil or Rio of course, but with over 2,000,000 people planning to converge on Copacabana beach, and another 2,000,000 getting together in São Paulo – it seems an allowable generalization.
Of course Rio is a big city with lots of alternatives, some amazing celebrations from Zona Oeste to Norte (West to North zone), and plenty in between.
There will also be plenty of people seeking shelter from the massive fun-storm in Rio’s hidden pousadas and idyllic beach outposts from Paraty to Buzios… which is my plan this year.
As The Rio Times wraps up their second calendar year, our contribution to the foreign community is our list of the ten most interesting gringos of Rio. This is not a scientific survey, but rather a cursory review of our articles in 2010, and some of the people whom made some of the most interesting stories. Of course the list could be a lot longer and please forgive us for your absence this year – but we’ve got our eye on you for 2011.
In March we’ll reach our two year anniversary, and it’s time to take stock of what we’ve accomplished, and what our future holds. We’re grateful for your Readership and Advertiser support, and hope to find a way to grow and improve in 2011.
Although I personally am not a “resolution guy”, I plan to work less and write more next year. With that, all the best, Happy New Year, Feliz Ano Novo, and have a safe, fun Réveillon 2011!
