Agricultural Boom Propels Brazil to 1.6% Economic Growth in Early 2025

Brazil’s economy grew 1.6% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous quarter, according to the GDP Monitor from Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV).

The Central Bank’s Economic Activity Index confirmed this trend with a 1.3% growth rate for the same period. This expansion reverses the declining trend observed since the third quarter of 2024.

Agriculture emerged as the primary growth driver with an impressive 12.2% expansion. The Ministry of Agriculture projects that Brazil’s gross value of agricultural production will reach R$1.41 trillion in 2025, marking an 11% increase from the previous year.

Record harvests of soybeans and cotton significantly contributed to this performance. The services sector, which carries the largest weight in Brazil’s GDP, grew by 1.3%.

This growth helped support the overall economic expansion. The industrial sector showed mixed results but ultimately contributed positively with a 1.6% quarterly increase according to Central Bank data.

In monetary terms, the GDP reached an estimated R$3.393 trillion ($600 billion) in the first quarter. When compared to the same period in 2024, the economy grew by 3.1% according to FGV’s Monitor.

The accumulated growth over the last 12 months reached 3.5%. Household consumption continued to grow but at a slower pace of 2.7% compared to 3.7% in the previous quarter.

This deceleration occurs amid Brazil’s highest interest rates in almost 20 years, currently at 14.25%. Investment, measured by Gross Fixed Capital Formation, grew by 6.9% in the first quarter.

The investment rate stood at 15.3% of GDP. Exports increased by 1.0% while imports surged by 12.8%. Economists expect growth to slow in the second half of 2025.

The Brazilian financial market projects 1.98% GDP growth for the full year, while BBVA Research forecasts a more conservative 1.6%. This anticipated deceleration stems from restrictive monetary policy and fiscal constraints.

High inflation and a less favorable global economic context also contribute to the slowdown. The official first-quarter GDP figures will be released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics on May 30, 2025.
