With NeuralMed, Brazil’s NotreDame Group makes its first investment in start-up

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In the race to innovate in the healthcare sector, the Notre Dame Intermédica group, a Brazilian pioneer in preventive medicine, has made its first investment in a startup.

On Monday, the company announced that it is contributing R$10 million (US$189) to the healthcare company NeuralMed. MG Tech and Alexia Ventures, which had already invested in the company earlier this year, also participated in this round.

Founded in 2018, the startup uses artificial intelligence to optimize medical care in emergency rooms and hospitals. NeuralMed’s technology not only reduces costs and supports the work of healthcare teams, but also enables the creation of a comprehensive database.

At the end of the transaction, NotreDame will hold a 9.29% stake in the startup, which will continue to be controlled by its founders. “The company continues to expand its strategic positioning and reaffirms its commitment to innovative healthcare solutions characterized by quality and efficiency,” Glauco Desiderio, director of investor relations for the Notre Dame Intermédica Group, told the market in a statement.

Last year, Group NotreDame Intermédica created an innovation committee to fundamentally better coordinate the company’s relationships with startups. “We continue to actively monitor the market for new opportunities, not only for investment but also for business relationships, co-development, and other forms of partnership,” said Pedro Campos, head of NotreDame’s business unit.

In previous rounds, the Inter-American Development Bank and angel investors have also invested capital in NeuralMed, in addition to MG Tech and Alexia. In total, the startup has already received R$13.2 million. The healthtech company plans to use the capital to invest in new product development, hiring a team, and internationalization. NeuralMed has an ambitious goal to grow by 700% by 2025.

The NotreDame Intermédica Group is a Brazilian pioneer in preventive medicine and offers solutions in health and odontology. Founded in 1968 and with headquarters in São Paulo, the group employs more than 14,000 people.

In June the group purchased the entire stock of Centro Clínico Gaúcho (CCG) in a transaction worth “R$1.06 billion (US$211 million), paid in cash.

Also in June, the group has signed a 10-year contract with EDP Brasil for the implementation of 4 solar power plants with approximately 4.4 MWp of installed power.

With a R$20 (US$3.9) million investment, the plants to be built through EDP Smart will supply 60 of NotreDame’s medical centers. The undertakings are expected to generate around 8,350 MWh per year, equivalent to the consumption of 2,784 homes.
