UNESCO has named Brazil’s Peruaçu Canyon a World Heritage Site, confirming its global importance. The canyon sits in northern Minas Gerais, about 650 kilometers from Belo Horizonte, and covers nearly 57,000 hectares.

It stands out for its vast caves, unique rock formations, and a mix of three major Brazilian ecosystems: Cerrado, Caatinga, and Atlantic Forest.

The park holds more than 150 mapped caves, including the Gruta do Janelão, which features the world’s largest known stalactite at 28 meters.

Archaeologists have found over 100 ancient sites here, with rock art and burial sites dating back 12,000 years. Scientists have recorded more than 1,000 plant species and 950 animal species in the area, many of them rare or endangered.

UNESCO’s decision goes beyond recognition. According to Brazil’s Ministry of Environment and data from the national parks system, protected status often brings new jobs and incomes through tourism and research.

Each dollar spent on these parks can generate up to seven dollars for local economies. The Peruaçu region, which has faced poverty and few opportunities, could now see more visitors, business, and investment.

Visitor numbers have already doubled in recent years, and local officials expect this trend to continue. However, park managers will limit access to sensitive caves and sites to protect the area’s fragile environment and history.

With this new title, Brazil now has 25 World Heritage Sites, including famous places like Iguaçu Falls and the Amazon Central Conservation Complex.

The Peruaçu Canyon’s recognition marks a chance for local people to benefit from their land’s unique natural and cultural value, while also ensuring it is preserved for the future.

This story is about turning rare natural beauty and ancient history into real economic hope for a region that needs it most.
