Thousands in Maputo Rally for Opposition’s Claimed Win

Thousands marched in Maputo, demanding a win for the main opposition party in municipal elections.

Yet, no official results are out. Lawmaker Muhamad Yassine addressed the crowd. He said they won and would uphold the people’s will.

Venâncio Mondlane led the rally. He’s the opposition’s candidate and also a parliament member.

He said these elections begin a political transition. The rally had no police presence and street vendors also joined.

Mondlane lost in the 2018 elections. He’s trying again to “win back Maputo,” as his slogan says.

He switched parties in 2018, joining the opposition. The sixth municipal elections took place in 65 Mozambican cities.

Polls closed at 6 p.m. local time. Over 4.8 million people could vote. The election commission noted a few incidents but said the voting went smoothly overall.

Official results will come within 15 days, as the law requires. People were voting for 65 new city council presidents and assembly members.

Background

In 2018, the ruling party won most of the municipal elections. The opposition only won in nine cities.

This rally shows growing support for the opposition. It also reveals the political tension in the country.

Venâncio Mondlane’s move to the opposition in 2018 was a significant event. It could have influenced this election.

Street vendors joining the rally indicates wider public involvement. The lack of police presence could suggest the government’s reluctance to engage.

Official results will clarify the political landscape in Mozambique for the coming years.
