Tensions Rise as Mexico Faces Inflation Spike Before Central Bank’s Rate Decision

In April 2024, Mexico’s markets buzzed with activity as inflation unexpectedly rose for a second month, just before Banxico’s key rate decision.

The National Consumer Price Index (INPC) climbed by 0.20% from the prior month, pushing annual inflation to 4.65%.

This was a notable shift from April 2023, when monthly inflation had slightly fallen while the yearly rate stood at 6.25%.

Analysts expected inflation to hit 4.63%, but real figures differed due to sharp increases in items like tomatoes and serrano peppers.

This divergence from forecasts presented a scenario different from expectations.

Core inflation, closely monitored by Banxico, registered at 4.37% annually, slightly below the forecasted 4.40%.

This marked the lowest rate since April 2021, extending a 15-month trend of gradual decline.

Goods prices rose 0.30%, yielding a 3.67% annual rate, while services inflation jumped to 5.21%.

Non-core inflation, including fruits and vegetables, increased to 5.54% annually, the highest since February 2023.

Specifically, fruits and vegetables recorded a staggering 18.57% inflation over the year, with agricultural products up by 7.35%.

Significant monthly increases included tomatoes at 13.67% and serrano peppers at 64.42%.

While gasoline, dining out, and housing prices also climbed, electricity and other commodities like onions and air transport services saw seasonal price drops.

As Banxico gears up for its May 9th interest rate announcement, market observers expect the rate to hold at 11%.

This upcoming decision is critical, with speculation about potential rate cuts in June, reflecting Banxico’s traditionally cautious approach.

This period illustrates the complex economic pressures and policy challenges Mexico faces amid fluctuating inflation rates and monetary policy adjustments.
