Smart Fit and Direcional Join Brazil’s Ibovespa as Market Reshuffles

The B3 stock exchange announced that Smart Fit (SMFT3) and Direcional (DIRR3) will join Brazil’s benchmark Ibovespa index effective May 5, 2025. This update marks Smart Fit’s first inclusion since its 2021 market debut.

The fitness chain enters with a 0.373% weight in the index, while real estate developer Direcional carries a 0.175% weight. These additions come as part of the quarterly review process that determines index composition until August 2025.

Two companies exit the index to make room for the newcomers. LWSA (LWSA3) leaves due to decreased liquidity, while Automob (AMOB3) departs after a brief stint that began in December.

Automob’s removal stems from its shares trading below R$1, violating a key criterion for index membership. The revamped Ibovespa will consist of 87 stocks from 84 Brazilian companies.

Mining giant Vale maintains its position as the heaviest constituent with a 10.655% weight. Banking behemoth Itaú Unibanco follows at 7.774%, with Petrobras preferred shares at 6.246%.

Companies must meet strict requirements to join the elite index. These include presence in 95% of trading sessions over the past year and representing at least 0.1% of market volume.

Stocks must also rank among the top 85% by tradability and maintain prices above R$1. Market analysts from major financial institutions had anticipated these changes.

The inclusion of Smart Fit reflects the growing importance of the fitness sector in Brazil’s economy. Direcional’s addition highlights renewed investor interest in real estate developers.

The Ibovespa serves as Brazil’s most important stock market benchmark. Its composition directly influences billions in passive investments that track the index. Fund managers must now adjust their portfolios to reflect these changes.

B3 releases three previews before finalizing each quarterly update. This transparent process allows investors to prepare for composition changes and adjust strategies accordingly. The latest revision represents the natural evolution of Brazil’s dynamic market landscape.
