Why we picked it: The season finale of the Noites de Verão series — and what a way to close. Os Paralamas do Sucesso, one of Brazil’s most beloved rock bands, play on the Morro da Urca with Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf behind them. Expect “Lanterna dos Afogados,” “Meu Erro,” and “Óculos.” The bondinho ride up is included in the ticket.

Practicalities: Gates at 22:00. Access via the Sugarloaf cable car — ticket includes the ride. Full food and drink on site. LED screen for rear views. Meia-entrada for under-21s, students, elderly, PCD, and anyone bringing 1 kg of non-perishable food.

Why we picked it: At 84, Ney Matogrosso remains Brazil’s most electrifying performer. The “Bloco na Rua” tour is a pre-Carnaval ritual — classics from Secos & Molhados, Raul Seixas, Rita Lee, Caetano Veloso, and Fagner, with custom costumes by Marcos Paulo and scenography by Batman Zavarese. On Wednesday he brought IZA and the Imperatriz Leopoldinense bateria to this same stage. Tonight is the regular show — more intimate, equally powerful.

Practicalities: Seated venue with assigned seats — arrive on time. Vivo Rio is in Parque do Flamengo with ocean views. Parking available. Easy metrô access (Cinelândia station, 10 min walk).

Why we picked it: Night 2 of the Terreirão do Samba’s 10-night Carnaval run — a Sesc RJ production next to the Sambódromo. Tonight’s lineup: Flávia Saolli, Intimistas, Tá Na Mente, and Thiago Soares, bookended by DJ FM O Dia sets. Tá Na Mente are among Rio’s hottest pagode acts. R$30 for five acts is the best value in the city tonight.

Practicalities: 18+ (16+ with guardian). Tickets via Bilheteria Digital or at the venue box office (no service fee at the door). This is the same space that opened last night with Mumuzinho and Dilsinho — expect returning crowds. Metrô: Praça Onze station.

Why we picked it: The legendary monthly feijoada at Mangueira’s Palácio do Samba — and this month the headliner is Alcione, one of the greatest samba voices alive. Opens with Karinah and Vitor Art, features Chacal do Sax and the Velha Guarda Musical da Mangueira, and closes with the Mangueira bateria in full force. An afternoon of food, samba, and Carnaval tradition you won’t find in any tourist guide.

Practicalities: Arrive by 13:00 if you want to eat — the feijoada sells out. The quadra is in the Mangueira favela; take a ride-hail to the door. Come with an open heart and dancing shoes. This is where Carnaval lives year-round.

Why we picked it: Two tribute shows at the Blue Note tonight — Mizinho Carvalho performs “Elton John Diamonds” at the first session, followed by Ademir Dancona’s “Phil Collins Carrossel” at the late session. The Blue Note’s intimate Copacabana room is the perfect counterweight to pre-Carnaval chaos. Oceanfront setting, first-class sound, table service.

Practicalities: Seated, session-based. Must vacate within 15 min after the set ends per Blue Note rules. 18+. Bilheteria at the venue has no service fee. The Blue Note’s Carnaval programming kicks off next week with Banda do Síndico (Tim Maia tribute) and the Casuarina trio.

Acts run through midnight and beyond. Tá Na Mente hits around 21:30, Thiago Soares later. R$30 entry. Best late-value in the city.

Gates open at 22:00. Show starts after — arriving at 22:30 or even 23:00 still gets you there. The cable car ride alone is worth it at night.

Doors at 20:30, show at 23:30. “Simplesmente Roupa Nova” tour — decades of Brazilian pop hits. Only if you’re out in Barra.

Ground zero for tonight’s Terreirão do Samba. By day: Bloco da Favorita marched through here at dawn. By night: pagode under the stars next to the Sambódromo. Metrô: Praça Onze. Walking distance from Lapa.

Tonight: Paralamas at the Morro da Urca, city skyline behind them. Normally one of Rio’s quietest neighborhoods — tonight is the exception. Arrive by cable car.

Vivo Rio sits in Parque do Flamengo with ocean views. Ney Matogrosso holds court here tonight. Close to Lapa — easy to pivot after the show. Metrô: Cinelândia or Catete.

Blue Note Rio anchors the night here with two tribute sessions. More tourist-friendly and calmer than Lapa. Av. Atlântica promenade always alive. Metrô: Cardeal Arcoverde or Siqueira Campos.
