Sam Greenfield is the kind of musician who exists at the intersection of everything — jazz training, pop instincts, funk groove, and the particular energy of someone who has spent years on the road with people who are better known than he is. He has toured as a sideman with Cory Wong of Vulfpeck, with Joss Stone, with Dave Koz, with Thank You Scientist. In the studio he has played on sessions with Ed Sheeran, Mariah Carey, John Legend and Queen Latifah. But his solo work is where the personality emerges: albums titled “Sam Greenfield Sucks” and “Sam Greenfield Rules” — the names alone suggest someone who approaches jazz-pop-funk with a sense of humour and a refusal to be serious about anything except the music itself. The sound blends jazz sophistication with pop melody and funk rhythm in a way that reviewers have called irresistible. Tonight he brings his band to the Blue Note Rio for two sessions — 8 pm and 10:30 pm — on a night when the venue also runs its Thursday-only Piano Bar Experience (R$25 couvert, house pianists and special guests). The calçadão HH runs from 5 pm free. Following last night’s Grammy-winning Avery*Sunshine, the Blue Note is delivering back-to-back international headliners to open April.

Thursday at the Scenarium is the night the venue hits its second gear — busier than Wednesday, not yet at Friday–Saturday peak, and with a crowd that skews toward regulars who know the building’s rhythms. The three-storey casarão on Rua do Lavradio operates in its full format: main-stage samba on the ground floor, gafieira on the upper levels, the seven antique-filled environments all open, the kitchen running, the bar at tempo. Thursday is when the Scenarium starts earning its reputation as one of the Guardian’s top-ten bars in the world — the energy is rising but the cover is still moderate (R$30–50) and the tables are still available if you arrive before 8 pm. The venue pushes past 1 am.

Thursday at the Gema is the night when the Happy Hour deal meets the pre-weekend crowd. The same format applies: free entry from 6:30 pm, dose dupla caipirinha de limão, Original at R$12.99, half-price petiscos — but Thursday’s crowd is larger and livelier than Tuesday or Wednesday. The main show at 8:30 pm plays to a room that has been building energy through two rounds of caipirinhas, and the atmosphere tips from conversational toward physical. Thursday is the last night before Friday’s full-intensity programme, and the Gema fills accordingly. The three-room casarão on Mem de Sá is at its sweet spot: busy enough to feel alive, not yet at the sardine-can density of Saturday.

Thursday extends the Beco’s hours to 1 am — an extra hour over the midweek midnight close. The alleyway on Joaquim Silva fills more noticeably on Thursday evenings as the pre-weekend crowd spills from the Gema HH and the Scenarium. The samba de raiz is the same: acoustic, raw, no cover. But Thursday is when the Beco starts to feel like the Friday version of itself — louder, more crowded, the energy pushing toward the weekend. The natural Thursday crawl: Gema HH at 6:30, Scenarium at 9, Beco at 11 for the late samba. Nova Capela for food at any point.

Piano · Intimate · R$25

The Piano Bar Experience is a Thursday-only format at the Blue Note Rio — the first-floor piano bar with its own programming, separate from the main stage upstairs. House pianists perform with weekly special guests, announced each Thursday. The couvert is R$25, the capacity is 140, and the atmosphere is more intimate and more conversational than the main stage. For visitors who want the Blue Note experience without the full concert commitment, the Piano Bar is the entry point: lower price, smaller room, the sound of a piano at close range with a cocktail in hand. The Piano Bar runs before and between the main-stage sessions — arrive from 5 pm during the Happy Hour and stay for the Piano Bar set before or after Greenfield’s show.
