Welcome to your Rio de Janeiro daily guide for Wednesday, April 22, 2026 — the first working day after Tiradentes and the most loaded cultural day of the month. At 09h the CCBB Rio opens Yoshitaka Amano — Além da Fantasia, the largest show of the Japanese artist’s career: 218 original works, including unseen pieces, free admission, across the entire second floor of the banking-hall dome on Rua Primeiro de Março. The MAM Rio reopens after its Tuesday closure with the Rubem Valentim retrospective entering its fourth weekend. The B3 reopens for the first time since Friday, facing a ceasefire-expiration session and the Petrobras ex-dividend cut-off — the most loaded tape of April. And São Jorge, the Rio state holiday, falls tomorrow. The weather holds 26°C with zero rain — a clean autumn day.
This is part of The Rio Times’ daily Rio de Janeiro/São Paulo daily guide coverage for expats and the international community.

Yoshitaka Amano — Além da Fantasia opens today
The largest show ever assembled of the Japanese artist’s work. 218 originals across the entire second floor — pinturas, illustrations, unseen pieces, plus an immersive tech-driven final room. Amano is best known to younger visitors as the character designer for Final Fantasy; older visitors will recognise the Vampire Hunter D and Angel’s Egg work, and the Candy Girl automotive-paint panels from the 2000s. Curated by Antonio Curti. The show occupies seven thematic nuclei: Tatsunoko, Final Fantasy, Candy Girl, Devaloka, Vampire Hunter D, Angel’s Egg, and Colaborações.
Free admission · 9h–20h, Wed–Mon (closed Tuesdays) · Through June 22 · Tickets at bilheteria or ccbb.com.br · Rua Primeiro de Março 66, Centro.
Rubem Valentim retrospective reopens
Back after the Tuesday closure. The Valentim retrospective — the Afro-Brazilian geometric master whose banner-emblems translated Candomblé iconography into modernist abstraction — enters its fourth weekend. Paired with the permanent collection and the Parque Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes gardens for a full half-day. Wednesday is the quietest weekday of the week here.
R$20 (R$10 meia) · 12h–18h Wed–Sun · Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85, Flamengo.
No Martins, Bienal itinerante, Augusti continue
The three shows anchoring the MAR’s autumn programme continue. No Martins’ Sortilégios de desvio — the first institutional solo for the painter of Black Brazilian life — runs through September 20. The 36th Bienal de São Paulo itinerance and Guilhermina Augusti complete the floor. Regular paid day (free Tuesday was yesterday).
R$20 · 10h–17h Wed–Sun · Praça Mauá 5.
04Getting AroundTRANSPORT
Back to weekday schedule
Linha 1 Uruguai–General Osório and Linha 2 Pavuna–Botafogo both on full weekday operation, 5h–midnight. The special Tiradentes schedule that had Linha 2 terminating at Botafogo is lifted — trains run through to Ipanema/General Osório via Linha 4 integration as normal.
VLT Parada dos Museus for CCBB Amano day
The CCBB is served by Carioca metro (8 min walk) or the VLT Parada dos Museus (6 min walk). On opening day, the shorter queue is at the VLT — the Carioca exit concentrates commuter flow during afternoon peak. Uruguaiana works as a third option. Buses on Primeiro de Março run all day.
Aterro do Flamengo reopens to cars
After the Tiradentes closure for pedestrians and cyclists, the Aterro returns to full vehicle operation today through Friday. The beach bikeway stays open. Avenida Atlântica in Copacabana runs its normal weekday configuration — the Sunday/holiday lane closure does not apply.
05Food & DrinkFOOD
Travessa do Comércio + Confeitaria Colombo
The natural lunch route after the morning Amano viewing: walk from CCBB to the Travessa do Comércio for a sit-down bacalhau or Portuguese steak at one of the tiled restaurants, or cut through to Gonçalves Dias for an afternoon espresso and a sonho at Confeitaria Colombo’s century-old mirrored hall. Both are five minutes on foot from the CCBB exit. Expect lunch crowds 13h–14h30.
Nova Capela + Rio Scenarium
Wednesday is the quiet night Lapa actually works — Scenarium returns to programming after its Tuesday dark night with a forró/samba lineup, and Nova Capela does its cabrito assado at open-late pace without the weekend crush. Beco das Garrafas in Copacabana runs its usual Wednesday bossa set.

Rio-specific holiday tomorrow — plan accordingly
Tomorrow, April 23, is São Jorge — a full state holiday in Rio de Janeiro (not observed in São Paulo or federally). State offices, most banks, and many private businesses close. The B3 trades normally because it is not a national holiday. Madureira runs the annual processions at the Igreja de São Jorge and the Quadra da Império Serrano. Expats with Friday bridge-day plans should confirm with employers today — many private workers treat Thu–Fri as an emenda, but it is optional, not legal.
US, UK, DE, FR consulates all open today
All major consulates in Rio resume normal operations Wednesday. Most will observe São Jorge tomorrow per local law — check individual websites if a visa or notarial appointment falls on Thursday. Federal Polícia Federal immigration services at Antonio Carlos and GIG airport run full hours today. CRNM renewals and registro applications cleared fastest on Wednesday mornings.
08Game DaySPORT
Brasileirão Round 11 wraps up midweek matches. Palmeiras and São Paulo remain tied at the top on 16 points; Flamengo and Fluminense work through a rotation week ahead of the São Jorge long-weekend round. The Weeknd plays Estádio Nilton Santos on Sunday April 26 — transport and access notes in Friday’s brief. Full schedule at The Rio Times sports coverage.
09Business & MarketsFINANCE
Monday close (B3 closed Tuesday for Tiradentes): Ibovespa +0.20% to 196,132 in thin pre-holiday volume. Petrobras +1.3% on Brent rebound to $94. Dollar steady around R$4.99. Structural reentry level at 199,350 for the run toward 200,000. Selic 14.75%. Focus IPCA 2026 at 4.71% — five consecutive weekly upgrades. YTD: +21.72%. R$67.4B foreign inflows. First euro bond in 12 years priced successfully.
Today’s reopen setup: The ceasefire expires when markets reopen — same session as the Petrobras ex-dividend cut-off. Most loaded tape of April. If peace holds and oil settles $88–92, the non-oil index re-targets 198,951 and the dollar tests R$4.90. If it collapses, oil back to $100, Petrobras surges short-term but Copom holds or hikes. Copom decision next Monday–Tuesday, April 28–29. For full analysis, see yesterday’s Ibovespa market report and today’s Brazil Morning Call.
