Raízen Posts R$2.57 Billion Loss Amid Operational and Financial Pressures
Brazilian sugarcane giant Raízen, co-owned by Cosan and Shell, reported a R$2.57 billion ($428M) net loss for the third quarter of the 2024/25 harvest season, reversing a R$793 million ($132M) profit from the same period last year.
The figures, disclosed on February 14, 2025, highlight the challenges faced by the world’s largest sugarcane processor as it grapples with operational disruptions and rising financial expenses.
The company’s adjusted EBITDA fell 20.5% year-on-year to R$3.12 billion ($520M), missing analysts’ expectations of R$3.42 billion. Despite this, Raízen’s net revenue rose 14% to R$66.87 billion ($11.15B), driven by increased sugar and ethanol sales volumes.
However, higher costs eroded profitability, with selling expenses climbing 14.9% and general administrative expenses surging 31.1%. Adverse weather conditions severely impacted operations.
Droughts and wildfires in August 2024 reduced sugarcane crushing volumes by nearly 27%, affecting both crop quality and production efficiency. Additionally, weaker trading performance across all business segments further weighed on results.
Raízen’s Financial Struggles and Strategic Challenges
Raízen’s financial position also deteriorated. The company’s leverage ratio jumped to 3 times EBITDA from 1.9 times a year earlier, reflecting mounting debt pressures.
Rising interest rates and non-recurring financial expenses compounded the challenges, prompting concerns about its ability to navigate current market conditions.
The company has been taking steps to stabilize its finances, including divesting non-core assets and adjusting its production strategies. However, these efforts have yet to offset the broader challenges in the bioenergy sector.
Analysts have noted that Raízen’s decision to withdraw its financial guidance for the current harvest season has added uncertainty, contributing to record lows in its stock price.
Raízen remains a key player in the sugar and ethanol markets but faces significant hurdles as it works to balance growth ambitions with financial sustainability.
Revenue growth reflects strong demand for its products. However, operational setbacks and rising costs underscore the need for strategic adjustments in the coming quarters.
