Príncipe Island has renewed its status as a World Biosphere Reserve for another ten years, as granted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The announcement followed a periodic review of the island’s efforts over the past decade by the São Tomé and Príncipe authorities.

The plan, Agenda Príncipe 2030, primarily aims for sustainable development, aligning its objectives with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to help develop the planet without destruction and compromising future generations.

Príncipe Island’s initial application was made in 2011 and was granted in July 2012.

In response to the renewal, the president of the Regional Government of Príncipe, Filipe Nascimento, expressed immense pride and satisfaction and acknowledged the great responsibility involved.

Nascimento highlighted renewal challenges, emphasizing the need to offer alternatives for the development process not to be compromised due to resource constraints, especially in sectors like construction that require tree and sand extraction.
