Poland expresses concern over increasing attempts of illegal border crossing at Belarusian border

Poland has experienced a surge in attempts of illegal crossings at its border with Belarus, with 228 reported incidents, including attacks on border surveillance patrols.

This year alone, there have been more than 16,000 illegal crossing attempts, with nearly 300 cases occurring last Thursday, marking the highest level of illegal activity since the 2021 border crisis.

Polish authorities attribute the increase in irregular migrants and heightened border pressure to the recent presence of Wagner Group mercenaries in Belarus.

The Polish Minister responsible for border surveillance accused Belarusian authorities of facilitating illegal crossings by providing equipment such as ladders and wire-cutting tools to immigrants attempting to cross and stones and bricks to attack Polish guards.

The situation has raised concerns about a potential Russian-backed plan to destabilize Europe, especially NATO’s eastern flank.

In response, Poland has deployed over 5,000 Border Guard officers, along with soldiers, anti-riot police, and Territorial Defense Force volunteers, at the border.

To address the issue, Poland constructed a 5.5-meter high steel barrier along 186 km of its border with Belarus and installed surveillance systems with cameras and sensors.

As a consequence of the border crisis, Poland has closed all commercial crossings with Belarus, leaving only two railway customs open.

The situation remains tense as Poland continues to monitor and address the challenges posed by illegal border crossings.

A couple of days ago, the Ukrainian Center for National Resistance, a division of the country’s Special Operations Forces, announced a possible initiative by the Wagner group to enlist Belarusian soldiers willing to engage in operations against Poland or Lithuania.

The Wagner group, a private military contractor with reported ties to Russia, is allegedly conducting this recruitment process during training sessions they offer to Belarusian soldiers on Belarusian territory.
