Peru’s Prime Minister calls on Petro to stop his “demagogic attack” against the country

Peru’s Prime Minister Alberto Otárola said Tuesday that he had asked Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro to “cease the demagogic attack against Peru,” as the latter has been critical of his Peruvian counterpart, Dina Boluarte, and the arrest of former President Pedro Castillo.

“I am going to give an account to the country of the belligerent attitude of President Petro, who continues to refer in inappropriate terms to the recent political process in Peru, (and) had an intervention in that sense in the morning session,” said the Peruvian prime minister in statements made to the media during the South American summit.

Otárola indicated that he referred to the universal principles of non-interference in matters of internal jurisdiction and sovereignty of the states to appeal to the “memory of the thousands of victims of terrorism and the guerrillas that lacerate the brother peoples of Colombia and Peru.”

He emphasized, “that the demagogic attack against Peru cease and respect the well-earned right to peace and tranquility that the people have achieved”.

However, the head of the Peruvian government, who attended the summit in Brasilia on behalf of Dina Boluarte, admitted that he has not personally spoken with Petro, although he has spoken with leaders of other countries, who, he said, have expressed their support for the Peruvian president.

“Peru is once again integrated into the international community; we have a fluid relationship with other countries”, said the Prime Minister.
