Peru’s Leadership Shake-Up: A New Direction Before Congress’s Verdict

On Monday night, Peru’s President Dina Boluarte took decisive action, updating the leadership across six vital ministries.

This overhaul happened just three days before Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzén requested Congress’s support for the Cabinet.

In a straightforward ceremony at the Government Palace, Boluarte welcomed Walter Ortiz as the incoming Minister of the Interior.

He took over from Víctor Torres, who stepped down the same day, citing personal reasons. His exit came after a backlash regarding a police operation at Boluarte’s home.

Torres made it clear his resignation was his choice, unrelated to any push from above or legislative rebuke.

Ortiz, who has 38 years under his belt as a National Police general, has been educated in Administration, Police Sciences, and Education at the National University of San Marcos.

His impressive résumé includes roles such as leading the Police Macro Region of Arequipa-Moquegua-Tacna, serving as a police attaché in Spain, and heading Police Aviation.

The reshuffle also introduced Morgan Quero as Minister of Education, Ángel Moreno in charge of Agricultural Development and Irrigation, and Sergio González as Minister of Production.

Elizabeth Galdo became Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, and Ángela Hernández became Minister of Women and Vulnerable Populations.

This series of changes followed an announcement by Maria del Carmen Alva, an independent congresswoman.

After discussions with Adrianzén, she hinted at imminent ministerial alterations aimed at securing parliamentary support.

Alva noted these adjustments were in response to feedback from various political factions, aiming for completion by April 4th.

Boluarte’s bold moves reflect a broader strategy to align her team ahead of a crucial confidence vote.

This reshaping signals a fresh direction and a responsive governance approach, demonstrating readiness to adapt and address parliamentary concerns.
