Today’s report and recent sessions

Our most recent Mexico report: Mexico Markets: IPC & the Peso — July 30, 2026 (July 30, 2026).

What the S&P/BMV IPC actually measures

The S&P/BMV IPC tracks the most heavily traded and highest-value companies listed on the BMV (Mexico City). It is a capitalisation-weighted index, which means the largest companies move it most: a one-percent move in the biggest constituent shifts the headline number far more than the same move in the smallest. Reading the index alone therefore tells you what the giants did, not what the average listed company did — which is why our daily report always breaks out the individual movers.

For a foreign reader, think of the IPC as Mexico’s equivalent to the S&P 500 in the United States or the FTSE 100 in the United Kingdom. It serves as the primary health check for the country’s corporate sector.

Because the index is dominated by a handful of very large firms, often with significant exposure to telecommunications, retail, and mining, a sharp move in the IPC can sometimes reflect a shift in just one or two sectors rather than a broad-based market swing. That concentration makes the underlying detail in the daily report essential for understanding whether a session’s decline was widespread or driven by a single heavyweight stock.

The session read
The S&P/BMV IPC eased 1.23%, with breadth negative — 5 of 15 names higher. Industrials led, while Other lagged.

Why the currency matters as much as the index

The S&P/BMV IPC is quoted in Mexican peso (MX$). For an investor holding dollars, a rising index paired with a weakening local currency can still mean a loss, and a flat index paired with a strengthening currency can mean a gain.

That is why every report on this page pairs the index with USD/MXN, and why we state which side of the pair moved. A falling USD/MXN means the local currency strengthened.

This relationship is especially important for international readers because the Mexican peso is one of the most traded emerging-market currencies in the world. Its value can be influenced by factors that have nothing to do with the stock market itself, such as interest-rate decisions by the Bank of Mexico, shifts in the US Federal Reserve’s policy, or changes in global risk appetite.

A day when the IPC falls but the peso strengthens sharply could still leave a dollar-based portfolio in positive territory, a nuance that is lost if you look only at the index level.

How to read our daily Mexico report

Each session we publish a full report built on the same structure: the session in one read, the verified numbers, why the market moved, the day’s individual movers, the regional scoreboard, the technical picture and what to watch next. Every index level, exchange rate and percentage move is taken directly from end-of-day market data and checked against it before publication — no figure in those reports is written from memory or estimated.

The consistency of that structure is deliberate. It lets a regular reader scan for the single piece of information they need, whether that is the name of the session’s biggest gainer or the latest support level for the peso.

The “why the market moved” section connects the day’s price action to concrete events, such as corporate earnings, economic data releases, or shifts in the political landscape, so you are never left with just a number and no story. The “what to watch next” section then frames the open questions that could shape the following session, without pretending to predict outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the S&P/BMV IPC?
It is Mexico’s benchmark stock-market index, tracking the largest and most actively traded companies listed on the BMV (Mexico City). It is quoted in Mexican peso (MX$).

Where do the figures on this page come from?
From verified end-of-day market data (EODHD). The level, the session change and the exchange rate are inserted automatically from that feed and are never written or estimated by hand.

How often is this page updated?
Every trading day, after the session closes, together with our full Mexico market report.

Does a falling USD/MXN mean the peso or real is weaker?
No — the opposite. USD/MXN expresses how many units of the local currency one US dollar buys, so a falling figure means the local currency strengthened.
