Magnitude 6.6 Earthquake Recorded at Sea, North of Ceará State
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A magnitude 6.6 earthquake was recorded in the Atlantic Ocean, north of the state of Ceará, yesterday. The quake was registered by the RSBR (Brazilian Seismographic Network) stations operated by the UFRN (Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte).
According to the RSBR, the epicenter of the earthquake occurred approximately 1,219 kilometers north/northeast of the city of Acaraú, in Ceará, and 1,277 kilometers north of Fortaleza.
The event was registered by all of the RSBR’s stations, the closest being Morrinhos, also in Ceará.
“Given the magnitude of the event it is expected that new quakes (aftershocks) will continue to occur in the coming hours,” reported the RSBR.
