Brazil’s 26-man World Cup squad landed in New Jersey on Monday, Neymar included, establishing their Harrison base with 12 days until the Morocco opener at MetLife Stadium.

Marquinhos, Vitinha, Gabriel Magalhães, and Martinelli flew directly from Budapest after Saturday’s Champions League final and joined training on Monday evening.

Ecuador confirmed their 26-man squad, with Willian Pacho arriving in Columbus fresh off his Champions League winner’s medal with PSG.

June 1 was the FIFA submission deadline for all 48 World Cup squads. The question of whether Brazil will use their replacement window before June 12 hinges on Neymar’s progress at the Egypt friendly in Cleveland on June 6.

On the eve of the NBA Finals, the Knicks confirmed Mitchell Robinson is expected to play Game 1 in San Antonio on Wednesday despite his fractured right pinkie.

As always, The Rio Times covers Latin America’s full sports landscape.

Brazil Land in Harrison: Marquinhos and Vitinha Arrive From Budapest, Neymar Begins Rehabilitation in New Jersey

Brazil WC

Brazil’s World Cup delegation arrived at their Harrison, New Jersey base on Monday, with most of the squad touching down from Rio de Janeiro in the morning.

The four Champions League finalists took separate flights from Budapest: Marquinhos and Vitinha (PSG winners) and Gabriel Magalhães and Martinelli (Arsenal runners-up) joined the group by early evening.

Neymar travelled with the main squad and underwent a rehabilitation assessment on arrival at the team’s NJ facility.

He has not taken part in any contact training since his Grade 2 calf tear was confirmed on May 28 by CBF doctor Rodrigo Lasmar, and the earliest he can return to full contact is June 10.

The first full collective session with all 26 players is scheduled for Tuesday June 2, when Ancelotti will have his complete group together for the first time.

The CBF confirmed that Marquinhos and Gabriel Magalhães, both of whom have been away since May 27, will be assessed before being cleared for contact work; standard protocol after a final gives them 48 hours before intensity returns.

Ancelotti’s next press conference is Wednesday June 4, one day after the NBA Finals tip off and nine days before Brazil’s World Cup opener against Morocco at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ (June 13, 6:00 PM ET).

The Egypt friendly in Cleveland remains on June 6 at 6:00 PM ET as the squad’s final pre-tournament run-out.

KEY STAT: Brazil WC base: Harrison, NJ. First full squad session: Tuesday June 2. Ancelotti press conference: Wednesday June 4. UCL finalists (Gabriel Magalhães, Martinelli, Marquinhos, Vitinha) cleared for contact after 48h recovery. Neymar: Grade 2 calf, earliest contact training June 10. Egypt friendly: June 6, Cleveland, 6:00 PM ET. WC opener: June 13 vs Morocco, MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ, 6:00 PM ET. WC Group C: June 19 vs Haiti (Lincoln Financial, Philadelphia, 9:00 PM ET); June 24 vs Scotland (Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, 6:00 PM ET).

Six Days, One Friendly, One Decision: What the Egypt Match Means for Neymar’s World Cup Place

Brazil WC

The timeline is unforgiving: Neymar can return to contact training as early as June 10.

Brazil’s World Cup opener is June 13 against Morocco.

Between those two dates, Ancelotti and the CBF medical staff have six days to decide whether a player who has not touched a ball in competitive play since May 17 can start, or even come on, against Africa’s top-ranked side.

Per CBF sources cited by Yahoo Sports, the June 6 Egypt friendly in Cleveland is the internal deadline: if Neymar cannot demonstrate meaningful training progress by that date, the CBF will exercise the FIFA replacement window.

The window remains open until June 12 (24 hours before Brazil’s first match), and the most-discussed candidate is Antony of Real Betis, who was on the provisional 55-man list but cut from the final 26.

The counter-argument for keeping Neymar regardless: the squad has Group C matches on June 13, June 19, and June 24.

Even at 50% fitness, a player of his quality creates doubt in opposing defences for the June 19 Haiti fixture or the June 24 Scotland game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Casemiro, Brazil’s co-captain, gave the squad’s diplomatic position when he said: “We need everyone for the games that will matter.”

Ancelotti’s last public word was: “We will assess everything after Egypt.” That assessment will take place on June 7.

KEY STAT: Neymar last competitive match: May 17 (vs Coritiba). Grade 2 calf confirmed: May 28. Earliest contact training: June 10 per CBF protocol. Egypt friendly: June 6, Cleveland. Pacho Flies From Budapest to Columbus: Ecuador’s World Cup Squad Confirmed With Two-Time UCL Champion in the XI

World Cup

Ecuador confirmed their final 26-man World Cup squad on May 31, with Willian Pacho heading directly from Budapest to the team’s Columbus base camp after PSG’s Champions League final win on Saturday.

Pacho, 23, has now won back-to-back Champions League titles before playing a single World Cup game, a career sequence that underlines how quickly he has risen from the Independiente del Valle academy to the highest level of European football.

Ecuador are in Group E alongside Germany, Ivory Coast, and Curaçao, with their opener against Ivory Coast at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on June 14.

Moisés Caicedo leads the midfield alongside fellow Premier League players, and Enner Valencia, Ecuador’s all-time leading World Cup scorer, is expected to feature off the bench given his age and a full competitive season at club level.

Colombia, in Group K alongside Portugal, DR Congo, and Uzbekistan, travel to Mexico for their opener on June 17 against Uzbekistan at Estadio Azteca.

Luis Díaz, PSG runner-up on Saturday, joins the squad with a Champions League final appearance on his CV, though not the medal Pacho carries from the same night.

Argentina submitted their squad on June 1 with Lionel Messi leading the group into his sixth World Cup, aiming to defend the title won in Qatar in 2022.

La Albiceleste open Group J against Algeria on June 16 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

KEY STAT: Ecuador squad confirmed May 31. Base camp: Columbus Crew Performance Centre, Columbus OH. Key players: Pacho (PSG, 2 UCL medals), Caicedo (Chelsea), Valencia, Hincapie (Arsenal). Group E opener: June 14 vs Ivory Coast, Estadio Azteca, Mexico City. Colombia opener: June 17 vs Uzbekistan, Estadio Azteca. Argentina opener: June 16 vs Algeria, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta. FIFA deadline for all 48 squads: June 1 (formal submission to FIFA by June 2).

Robinson Cleared for Game 1, Champagnie Dreams of MSG: The NBA Finals Begin Tomorrow in San Antonio

NBA

The Knicks confirmed on Monday that Mitchell Robinson is expected to play in Game 1, a significant boost for New York’s defensive scheme entering a series where Wembanyama’s activity in the paint will define the matchup.

Robinson underwent surgery on his fractured right pinkie on Thursday May 28; Knicks coach Mike Brown clarified on Friday that the injury did not occur during team activities, though he declined to give specifics.

Robinson averaged 9.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game across the Knicks’ postseason; the only regular-season loss New York suffered against San Antonio this year came in the game Robinson missed.

He will play in a protective brace and his minutes may be managed, with Karl-Anthony Towns providing the backup option at centre if Brown wants to go bigger or smaller on any given possession.

The series carries one of the NBA Finals’ more resonant backstory threads: Julian Champagnie, the Spurs’ stretch forward who scored 20 points (6-of-6 from three) in Game 7 against OKC, grew up in Brooklyn and will play Games 3, 4, and potentially 6 at Madison Square Garden.

NBC Sports described it as a “Brooklyn kid living his dream”, the first time the Finals have come to MSG since 1999, when Tim Duncan’s Spurs beat the Knicks in five games, the series this one formally mirrors.

The Spurs enter as -196 favourites (FanDuel) with home court for Games 1, 2, 5, and 7 at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio; Games 3, 4, and 6 are at MSG in New York.

Game 1 tips off Wednesday June 3 at 8:30 PM ET on ABC. Game 2 is Friday June 5, also in San Antonio.

KEY STAT: Mitchell Robinson: expected to play Game 1 (fractured right pinkie, surgery May 28, protective brace). Knicks’ only regular-season loss to Spurs: game Robinson missed. Robinson postseason avg: 9.2 pts, 10.4 reb, 1.8 blk. Champagnie: 20 pts, 6-6 3P in Game 7. Series format: 2-2-1-1-1 (Spurs home G1/G2/G5/G7; MSG G3/G4/G6). Spurs -196 FanDuel. NBA Finals schedule: G1 Jun 3, G2 Jun 5, G3 Jun 8, G4 Jun 10, G5 Jun 13*, G6 Jun 16*, G7 Jun 19* (*if necessary).

The 2026 World Cup Begins Thursday: Which LatAm Groups and Matches Will Rio Times Readers Care About Most?

Analysis

The 2026 World Cup opens on Thursday June 11 in Mexico: Mexico vs South Africa at Estadio Azteca, with 48 teams playing 104 matches across 16 North American venues until the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium.

Six South American nations qualified: Brazil (Group C), Argentina (Group J), Colombia (Group K), Ecuador (Group E), Uruguay (Group H), and Paraguay (Group D).

Group C (Brazil’s group) is the one this column covers most closely: Brazil vs Morocco opens June 13, with Scotland and Haiti as the other fixtures.

Morocco, coached by Belgium-born Mohamed Ouahbi after Walid Regragui’s departure, reached the 2022 semi-finals and remain a genuine knockout-round threat.

Group J (Argentina) is historically softer: Algeria, Austria, and Jordan stand between Messi’s side and the Round of 32.

Argentina open against Algeria on June 16 in Atlanta, with the nation’s defence of the 2022 title expected to be their primary story through the group stage.

Group E (Ecuador) is the toughest LatAm group outside Brazil’s: Germany, Ivory Coast, and Curaçao represent a genuine test for Félix Sánchez’s side.

Pacho’s form and Caicedo’s control of the midfield will determine whether Ecuador can advance from a group where Germany are strong favourites to top the table.

Group K (Colombia) is intriguing: Luis Díaz’s side face Portugal (Group K leaders on paper) in Miami on June 27, a match that could decide which team finishes top of the group.

Uruguay (Group H vs Spain, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia) and Paraguay (Group D vs USA, Australia, Türkiye) round out South America’s six, with coverage priorities assigned accordingly.

KEY STAT: WC opens June 11: Mexico vs South Africa, Estadio Azteca. Six LatAm nations in the tournament. Brazil Group C opener: June 13 vs Morocco, MetLife Stadium NJ, 6pm ET. Argentina Group J opener: June 16 vs Algeria, Mercedes-Benz Stadium Atlanta. Ecuador Group E opener: June 14 vs Ivory Coast, Estadio Azteca. Colombia Group K opener: June 17 vs Uzbekistan, Estadio Azteca. WC final: July 19, MetLife Stadium NJ.

Schedule Correction and the Brasileirão Pause: What Brazilian Football Looks Like Until July 22

Standings

Two details about Brazil’s World Cup schedule were incorrectly stated in previous editions of this column, and we want to set them right.

The Haiti fixture is on June 19 (not June 18) at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia at 9:00 PM ET.

The Scotland fixture is at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens (not Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta) on June 24 at 6:00 PM ET.

The full corrected Group C schedule: June 13 vs Morocco (MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford NJ, 6 PM ET); June 19 vs Haiti (Lincoln Financial, Philadelphia, 9 PM ET); June 24 vs Scotland (Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, 6 PM ET).

With the Brasileirão now in its World Cup pause, Brazilian club football does not resume until July 22, when Round 19 kicks off.

The pause table entering the break: Palmeiras lead on 39 points, Flamengo second on 34, Fluminense third on 31.

In the relegation zone, Vasco (14 pts) remain deepest, with Santos (21), Corinthians (22), and Mirassol (19) occupying the rest of the Z4 danger area.

The Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana knockout rounds resume August 11-13 for first legs, with six Brazilian clubs (Flamengo, Palmeiras, Cruzeiro, Corinthians, Fluminense, Mirassol) will face continental football before their Brasileirão campaign restarts.

Vasco, Santos, and Bragantino face Copa Sudamericana playoff matches in late July, with those results potentially affecting their squad dynamics heading into Round 19.

SCHEDULE CORRECTION: Brazil vs Haiti: June 19 (not June 18), Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, 9:00 PM ET. Brazil vs Scotland: June 24, Hard Rock Stadium, Miami (not Mercedes-Benz/Atlanta), 6:00 PM ET. Brasileirão resumes July 22 (Round 19). Copa Libertadores R16 first legs: August 11-13.
