The Maracanã on Sunday night answered one of the questions Ancelotti most needed answered: Brazil beat Panama 6-2 in the pre-World Cup farewell, 72,140 in attendance, Vinicius Júnior opening in the second minute with a top-corner strike and six different players scoring across 90 minutes. Casemiro headed in before half-time; Rayan, Paquetá, Igor Thiago (penalty), and Danilo added second-half goals after a complete lineup overhaul at the break. Neymar sat in the VIP section throughout and did not warm up. Today the squad flies to the United States, with the UCL finalists (Marquinhos, Vitinha, Gabriel Magalhães, and Martinelli) joining from Budapest. The Egypt friendly in Cleveland is June 6; the Morocco opener at MetLife Stadium is June 13. Separately, Brasileirão Round 18 completed on Sunday, closing the last competitive domestic fixtures before the World Cup pause: Palmeiras won 1-0 against Chapecoense to hold their seven-point lead, Corinthians beat Grêmio 3-1 to pull clear of the relegation zone, and Santos beat Vitória 3-1 at the Vila Belmiro, the Peixe entering the break having found some form. Vasco lost 0-1 to Atlético-MG at São Januário and remain in the relegation zone deepest at 14 points. As always, The Rio Times covers Latin America’s sports landscape.

Vinicius in the Second Minute, Six Goals in 90, Ancelotti Changes Ten at Half-Time: Brazil Sign Off the Maracanã With Authority

Brazil WC

Brazil’s last home match before the World Cup ended as Maracanã send-offs tend to: with six goals, a crowd of 72,140, and the nagging exception that the most famous player in the squad watched it all from the VIP section. Vinicius Júnior scored inside 90 seconds with a low drive from the edge of the box that caught Panama goalkeeper Luis Mosquera at his near post, and Brazil did not look back. The first half belonged to the first-choice XI: Casemiro added a header from a Vinicius cross before the break, while Panama’s consolation came from an Amir Murillo free kick that deflected in off Matheus Cunha for a 14th-minute own goal. Half-time: Brazil 2-1 Panama.

Ancelotti made ten changes at the interval, replacing every outfield player except Léo Pereira, and the second-choice squad was still clinical. Rayan, the 19-year-old Bournemouth forward on his first major pre-tournament appearance, scored eight minutes into the second half from the right side after Mosquera fumbled a back-pass. Lucas Paquetá added a fourth at the hour; Igor Thiago converted a penalty at 63′ after a foul inside the box. Danilo curled in the sixth at 81′. Panama substitute Carlos Harvey struck a long-range consolation in the 84th minute for a final score of 6-2.

The tactical questions from a Brazil perspective: Endrick started the second half as one of two forwards alongside Igor Thiago but had a quiet 45 minutes, his one clear chance stopped on the line. Rayan’s opener and general energy made a stronger case for inclusion in the Morocco game than the teenager’s previous appearances have; Paquetá’s assist-and-goal contribution confirmed his importance in the attacking-midfield role. The first-choice starting line-up, led by Vinicius, Raphinha, and Casemiro in the first half: cohesive and sharp, which is the most important data point from a match of this kind.

Neymar attended in the stands and did not participate in any warm-up or training activities. Speaking to reporters after the match, Ancelotti confirmed the squad departs for the United States on Monday June 1, with the four Champions League finalists joining from Budapest. Asked again about Neymar’s World Cup chances, Ancelotti reiterated his Saturday position, this time without the joke: “He is working hard. We will assess everything after Egypt.”

Brazil’s final warm-up before the World Cup: Egypt, June 6, Huntington Bank Ballpark, Cleveland (kick-off 18:00 ET).

“If My Grandad Had Wheels, He’d Be a Car”: Ancelotti Sets Egypt Friendly as Neymar’s Internal Deadline

Brazil WC

Carlo Ancelotti’s Saturday press conference at Granja Comary produced a line that travelled quickly around global football media. Asked whether he would have included Neymar in the squad if he had known from the outset that the injury was a Grade 2 calf tear rather than the mild oedema Santos had described, Ancelotti deflected with characteristic wit: “If my grandad had wheels, he’d be a car.” He then added, directly: “Since I decided on the squad, Neymar was in the 26.” The Italian confirmed the CBF took charge of Neymar’s medical management after the call-up was made on May 18, and that the gap between the club’s diagnosis and the CBF’s MRI finding was a matter for the medical staff to address internally.

The most significant update from the press conference was operational: the Egypt friendly in Cleveland on June 6 is the internal CBF deadline for deciding whether to exercise the FIFA replacement window. Per Yahoo Sports, citing CBF sources, if Neymar is not showing meaningful progress toward light training by the time the squad arrives in Cleveland, the confederation will trigger the window and bring in a replacement before the June 12 deadline. The most likely candidate remains Antony (Real Betis), who was in the provisional 55-man list but omitted from the final 26. Ancelotti has not publicly named any candidate.

Casemiro, speaking to reporters after the Panama game, offered a measured assessment: “No player likes being injured. But hopefully Neymar and all the players will be fit and healthy to play the games we know we need everyone for.” The phrasing, “we need everyone for,” is a coded acknowledgement that Brazil’s Group C fixtures (Morocco ranked 12th globally, Haiti ranked 58th), Scotland (ranked 22nd) do not constitute a group where they can afford to be without their most creative presence across all three matches.

Neymar travels with the squad to the United States today. He will undergo additional rehabilitation assessments on arrival in New Jersey. According to the CBF’s published rehabilitation timeline, he will not participate in any contact training before June 10 at the earliest. The Morocco game is June 13.

The four Champions League finalists (Marquinhos, Vitinha, Gabriel Magalhães, Martinelli) are expected to land in New Jersey from Budapest today and join the squad for the first collective training session on Tuesday June 2.

KEY STAT: Ancelotti Saturday press conference, Granja Comary. “If my grandad had wheels, he’d be a car” (on being asked if he’d still have called up Neymar knowing the injury severity). Internal CBF deadline: Egypt friendly June 6 in Cleveland. FIFA replacement window: open until June 12. Likely replacement candidate: Antony (Real Betis, in provisional 55-man list). Neymar travels with squad today; no contact training before June 10 per CBF protocol. UCL finalists join camp today in New Jersey.

Brasileirão Round 18: How the Table Looks at the World Cup Pause

Brasileirão

Round 18 was the last Brasileirão action before the seven-week World Cup pause. The Saturday evening slate saw Flamengo demolish Coritiba 3-0 at the Maracanã (the same venue that hosted the Brazil-Panama friendly eight hours later), while Corinthians delivered their best away result of the season, winning 3-1 at the Arena do Grêmio in Porto Alegre to climb three points further clear of the relegation zone. Santos beat Vitória 3-1 at the Vila Belmiro, a result that gives the Peixe four points from their last two games entering a pause in which Neymar’s potential World Cup squad involvement will dominate the club’s narrative. Sunday added four more fixtures: Palmeiras beat last-place Chapecoense 1-0 to consolidate their lead; Bragantino beat Internacional 3-1; Vasco lost a sixth consecutive game, 0-1 to Atlético-MG at São Januário; and Cruzeiro drew 0-0 with Fluminense at the Mineirão.

Top of the table entering the pause

  • Palmeiras — 39 points from 18 games. Seven-point lead. Unbeaten in their last nine. Copa Libertadores R16 vs Cerro Porteño awaits in August.
  • Flamengo — 34 points from 18 games. Beat Coritiba 3-0 to stay in contention. Copa Libertadores R16 vs Cruzeiro, the same Cruzeiro who are their Brasileirão rivals — in August.
  • Fluminense — 31 points from 19 games. Drew 0-0 at the Mineirão; entering the pause third. Copa Libertadores R16 vs Independiente Rivadavia in August.

The relegation picture (Z4) entering the pause

  • Vasco da Gama — 14 points from 18 games. Lost 0-1 to Atlético-MG. Sixth consecutive defeat. Deepest in the Z4 by four points.
  • Santos — 21 points from 18 games. Beat Vitória 3-1. Above the Z4 line (19 points) by two, but with games in hand to be played out and a Copa Sudamericana playoff round in late July that could stretch their squad.
  • Corinthians — 22 points from 18 games. Won at Grêmio 3-1. Three clear of the Z4 line; Copa Libertadores R16 (vs Rosario Central) in August.
  • Mirassol — 19 points from 18 games. Lost 1-0 to Athletico-PR. Three points above the Z4 line entering the pause; Copa Libertadores R16 (vs LDU Quito, altitude first leg) in August.

The Brasileirão resumes on July 22. The Libertadores and Sudamericana knockout rounds begin August 11-13. Several clubs (Flamengo, Corinthians, Mirassol, Cruzeiro, Palmeiras, Fluminense) will therefore play competitive continental football before their league campaign restarts, with no pre-season buffer.

KEY STAT: R18 Saturday: Flamengo 3-0 Coritiba; Athletico-PR 1-0 Mirassol; Bahia 2-1 Botafogo; Grêmio 1-3 Corinthians; Santos 3-1 Vitória. R18 Sunday: Bragantino 3-1 Internacional; Palmeiras 1-0 Chapecoense; Vasco 0-1 Atlético-MG; Cruzeiro 0-0 Fluminense; Remo 0-0 São Paulo. Pause standings: Palmeiras 39 (1st), Flamengo 34 (2nd), Fluminense 31 (3rd). Z4 at pause: Vasco 14 (deepest), then a gap to Santos 21, Corinthians 22, Mirassol 19. League resumes July 22.

Analysis: What Ancelotti Learned From the Panama Game — and What He Still Doesn’t Know

Analysis

A 6-2 win over a World Cup-qualified Panama side tells Ancelotti three things and leaves three others unresolved. The confirmed positives: Vinicius Júnior is in form and still the most decisive single player on Brazil’s first-choice XI; Casemiro, whose best club football is behind him at Manchester United but who remains an anchor for the national team, headed in a second goal from a Vinicius cross that was very specifically the kind of set-piece combination Ancelotti will have practised all week; and Rayan, the Bournemouth teenager competing with Endrick for the third forward slot behind Vinicius and Raphinha, opened his scoring account for the national team in style off a fortuitous deflection, but then demonstrated composed finishing on the follow-up. His case for the Morocco starting lineup is now stronger.

What Ancelotti still does not know: whether Endrick can be a starter at this tournament. The 19-year-old Lyon forward had a second half against Panama in which his movement was good but his finishing was not: his one clear chance was stopped on the goal line, and his link play with Igor Thiago was inconsistent. Against Morocco’s high defensive line, Ancelotti’s Endrick question is still open. The Egypt game on June 6 will be his last audition before the tournament; if he does not start against Morocco, Rayan’s performance on Sunday will be the reason.

The second unknown is the central defensive partnership. Without Gabriel Magalhães (arriving Monday after the Champions League final) and with Marquinhos similarly absent, Sunday’s defensive showing against Panama raised some concerns: Panama had 16 shot attempts and goalkeeper Becker, starting in place of Alisson, who played the first half, was called upon several times in the second. Panama’s 9 shots on target (against 12 for Brazil) is a stat that will not alarm the coaching staff greatly given the lineup changes, but it confirms that the defensive cohesion with the B-team is not where it needs to be.

The third unknown remains Neymar. The first-choice front line without him still operates at high quality, as Sunday showed. But the gap between what Brazil look like with him potentially available and what Morocco’s defensive structure is equipped to handle in their opening group game is what makes the Grade 2 calf decision the most consequential medical call in Brazilian football since Neymar broke his back against Colombia in 2014.

KEY STAT: Brazil first-half XI (first-choice): Vinicius, Raphinha, Casemiro, Alisson, Bremer, Léo Pereira; second-half XI (reserves): Rayan, Endrick, Igor Thiago, Paquetá, Ederson. Panama: 16 shot attempts, 9 on target. Rayan first national-team goal (53′). Endrick chance stopped on line. Gabriel Magalhães and Marquinhos join Tuesday June 2 for first collective session. Egypt friendly (June 6) is Ancelotti’s last pre-tournament assessment window.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

What was the Brazil vs Panama result and who scored?

Brazil beat Panama 6-2 at the Maracanã on Sunday May 31 in front of 72,140 spectators, their final home game before the 2026 World Cup. Vinicius Júnior opened in the second minute with a driven finish from the edge of the box, and Casemiro headed in a Vinicius cross to make it 2-1 before half-time after Amir Murillo’s free kick had deflected in off Matheus Cunha for an equaliser at the 14th minute. Ancelotti changed ten players at the interval; Rayan scored in the 53rd minute after a goalkeeper error, Paquetá added a fourth at the hour, Igor Thiago converted a penalty at 63′, and Danilo curled in the sixth at 81′. Panama substitute Carlos Harvey scored a long-range consolation in the 84th minute. Neymar was in attendance but did not train or warm up, continuing his recovery from a Grade 2 calf tear. Brazil depart for the United States today (Monday June 1) with the Egypt friendly scheduled for June 6 in Cleveland and the World Cup opener against Morocco on June 13 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

How does the Brasileirão table look after Round 18?

Round 18 completed the Brasileirão before the World Cup pause, which runs until July 22. Palmeiras lead on 39 points from 18 games, seven clear of second-placed Flamengo (34 points, after a 3-0 win over Coritiba on Saturday). Fluminense are third on 31 points after a 0-0 draw at Cruzeiro. In the relegation zone, Vasco da Gama are deepest with 14 points after losing 0-1 to Atlético-MG on Sunday, their sixth consecutive defeat. Santos are on 21 points after Saturday’s 3-1 win over Vitória, two above the Z4 line. Corinthians moved to 22 points with a 3-1 win at Grêmio, three clear of the relegation zone. Mirassol, who lost 1-0 to Athletico-PR, hold 19 points and remain three above the Z4 while also preparing for the Copa Libertadores Round of 16 against LDU Quito in August.

Will Neymar be replaced in Brazil’s World Cup squad?

Neymar has not been replaced and travels with the Brazil squad to the United States today. Ancelotti said on Saturday at Granja Comary that “since I decided on the squad, Neymar was in the 26,” deflecting a question about whether he would have called up the player if he had known the injury was a Grade 2 calf tear rather than the mild oedema Santos initially described. Per CBF sources cited by Yahoo Sports, the June 6 friendly against Egypt in Cleveland has been set as the internal deadline: if Neymar cannot show meaningful progress in training by that date, the CBF will trigger the FIFA squad replacement window before the June 12 deadline. The most likely replacement candidate is Antony of Real Betis, who was in the provisional 55-man list. Neymar’s earliest return to contact training is June 10 per the CBF’s rehabilitation protocol; Brazil’s opener against Morocco at MetLife Stadium is June 13.
