Morocco drew 1-1 with Norway at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, eleven miles from Brazil’s Columbia Park base camp, the last stop for the Atlas Lions’ final dress rehearsal before meeting Brazil on June 13.

Brahim Díaz scored after eight minutes; Martin Ødegaard equalised in the 75th, eight days after the two men faced each other in the Champions League final in Budapest.

Carlo Ancelotti settled the starting XI question after the Egypt game: “I have decided the starting lineup to face Morocco. The idea is clear.” Wesley França’s injury: he left the Egypt match in tears, is the one uncertainty remaining.

Ecuador beat Guatemala 3-0 in Columbus, extending an unbeaten run that now stands at 19 matches since their last defeat, a 2024 loss against Brazil, with Moisés Caicedo rested and Ivory Coast waiting on June 14.

Paraguay face a serious injury concern: Julio Enciso, the Brighton forward who is their most creative player, left a June 5 friendly against Nicaragua grabbing his right leg in tears, and tests have not yet clarified whether he can play the World Cup opener against the United States on June 12.

As always, The Rio Times covers Latin America’s full sports landscape.

Morocco draw in Brazil’s back yard — Ødegaard spoils the Atlas Lions’ send-off

World Cup

Morocco’s final World Cup warmup happened at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, the same borough where Scotland beat Bolivia 4-0 on Saturday, and eleven miles from where Brazil train.

Brahim Díaz, Morocco’s Spanish-born attacking midfielder and the player Brazil’s analysts will have tracked most closely, opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a driven finish inside the box.

Norway equalised in the 75th through Martin Ødegaard, whose strike denied Morocco a fourth consecutive win ahead of the tournament.

The game carried a layer of storyline that had nothing to do with the scoreline: Achraf Hakimi and Ødegaard faced each other eight days after the Champions League final, in which Hakimi’s PSG beat Ødegaard’s Arsenal on penalties.

Erling Haaland earned his 50th senior cap for Norway but was largely kept quiet; Morocco’s defensive shape held him to minimal touches in the first half.

Norway earned nine corners to Morocco’s two, a statistical footprint that suggests the Atlas Lions were happy to defend deep and hit on the break, which is precisely the structure Brazil will face on June 13.

Noussair Mazraoui, Morocco’s right-back, spoke to the media after the match about the Brazil clash.

“It’ll be fun marking Cunha at the World Cup,” he said, in what read as a deliberate attempt to shape the narrative before the group opener.

In short — Morocco drew 1-1 with Norway in Harrison NJ (Díaz 8′, Ødegaard 75′), their final warmup before Brazil on June 13 — Hakimi played, Haaland was quiet, and Morocco’s nine corners conceded versus two suggested they were already in WC defensive mode.

Ancelotti: “The idea is clear” — and Wesley’s tears cloud the right-back picture

Brazil WC

Speaking after Brazil’s 2-1 win over Egypt on Saturday, Ancelotti gave the clearest signal yet that his World Cup selection work is complete.

“I have decided the starting lineup to face Morocco,” he told reporters. “The changes I may make will depend on some details, but the idea is clear.”

Asked to elaborate on the Egypt performance, Ancelotti identified the first 60 minutes as a model; the brief defensive lapse (Marquinhos’s back-pass, Zico’s equaliser) as the exact mistake a side playing Morocco cannot afford.

The one unresolved piece of his lineup is the right-back position, and it is entirely due to Wesley França’s injury.

The Roma defender was forced off at the 17th minute of the Egypt game, left the pitch visibly distressed and reportedly in tears, and will undergo further medical tests to determine the extent of the problem.

Ancelotti said the squad has the depth to cope without Wesley if needed, with Danilo the natural replacement; the São Paulo defender came on in Cleveland and was solid for 73 minutes.

On Neymar: no change from previous position. The June 12 MRI scan, the day before the Morocco opener, remains the final medical checkpoint.

His most likely scenario remains an appearance against Haiti on June 19 or Scotland on June 24 rather than June 13.

In short — Ancelotti has his XI locked in with one asterisk: Wesley França’s injury, which saw the Roma right-back leave in tears in Cleveland, means Danilo is the likely starter on June 13 — Neymar’s June 12 MRI remains the tournament’s other outstanding medical question.

Ecuador beat Guatemala to take a 19-game unbeaten run into the World Cup

World Cup

Ecuador beat Guatemala 3-0 in Columbus, Ohio, on Sunday, their final warm-up before Group E play begins against Ivory Coast in Philadelphia on June 14.

Jordy Caicedo converted a penalty, Kevin Rodríguez and Jeremy Arévalo added further goals in a comfortable win that extended Ecuador’s unbeaten run to 19 matches.

Moisés Caicedo did not start; Beccacece was managing the Chelsea midfielder’s minutes ahead of the tournament; both his presence and his rest were read as tactical rather than physical decisions by the Ecuadorian press.

Ecuador’s last defeat was in September 2024 against Brazil, a CONMEBOL qualifier that now carries a degree of irony: the two nations are in separate World Cup groups and will not meet until at least the knockout stage.

Beccacece’s side also carry a remarkable defensive record into the tournament: twelve clean sheets in their last 18 competitive matches.

The Group E picture: Germany are heavy favourites to top the group; Ecuador’s route to the Round of 32 runs through the Ivory Coast opener and the Curaçao fixture on June 20.

In short — Ecuador beat Guatemala 3-0 in their final warmup, Jordy Caicedo scoring the penalty and Moisés Caicedo rested ahead of Ivory Coast on June 14 in Philadelphia; 19 games unbeaten, 12 clean sheets in the last 18 competitive matches.

Enciso left in tears — Paraguay’s World Cup doubt grows before the USA opener

World Cup

Julio Enciso, Paraguay’s most creative attacking player, left their June 5 friendly against Nicaragua in tears in the 24th minute after pulling up sharply and grabbing the back of his right leg.

The Brighton midfielder, 21, punched the turf in frustration before being helped off, a reaction that the Paraguayan press described as consistent with a muscular injury rather than a collision.

World Soccer Talk, citing team sources, said tests had not yet returned a definitive diagnosis, noting the injury “could be a tear or it may just be a knock.”

Paraguay open Group D on June 12 against the United States at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood in five days, and the timing of the injury could not be more precarious.

The absence of Enciso would represent a significant blow to coach Daniel Garnero’s plans: the young forward is Paraguay’s primary link-play option in the final third and scored several key goals during the CONMEBOL qualifying campaign.

Paraguay have managed the situation quietly, and as of Sunday June 7 have not issued a definitive fitness ruling.

In short — Julio Enciso (Brighton, 21) left Paraguay’s June 5 friendly vs Nicaragua in tears grabbing his right leg in the 24th minute; no diagnosis confirmed as of Sunday, but Paraguay open against the USA on June 12 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, and he could miss the World Cup entirely.

Game 3 at the Garden tonight — Champagnie goes home to Brooklyn

NBA

The NBA Finals move to Madison Square Garden tonight, Monday June 8, 8:30 PM ET on ABC, with the Knicks leading the series 2-0 after two one-point wins in San Antonio.

The last NBA Finals game at MSG was June 25, 1999, the same 1999 series this one mirrors, when the Spurs won in five games.

Julian Champagnie, who scored 20 points in the Spurs’ Game 1 defeat and 16 in Game 2, grew up in Brooklyn; tonight is his first Finals appearance at his home arena.

The Spurs need to win or face a near-impossible 0-3 deficit; ESPN Analytics gives New York a 58.2% chance of winning Game 3 from home court.

Wembanyama had 29 points in Game 2 but the decisive turnover; Fox recovered from 7 to 18 points but the ankle sprain that has lingered since Round 2 is still the variable to watch.

Result in tomorrow’s edition, which will also carry full World Cup opening-day coverage from Mexico City.

In short — Game 3 is tonight at MSG (8:30 PM ET, ABC), Knicks 2-0 up; Champagnie plays his first Finals game in Brooklyn; ESPN Analytics gives New York a 58.2% win probability — Spurs must respond or face an almost certain 0-3 deficit.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

What happened when Morocco played Norway ahead of the World Cup?

Morocco drew 1-1 with Norway in Harrison, NJ on June 7, their final warmup before the World Cup. Brahim Díaz scored in the eighth minute; Martin Ødegaard equalised in the 75th, denying Morocco a fourth straight win.

The game took place a few miles from Brazil’s Columbia Park training base. Hakimi and Ødegaard faced each other for the first time since the Champions League final eight days earlier; Haaland earned his 50th cap but had limited impact.

Brazil face Morocco in their World Cup opener on June 13 at MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, at 6pm ET.

Has Ancelotti announced Brazil’s starting lineup for Morocco?

Not by name, but effectively yes. Ancelotti said after the Egypt win: “I have decided the starting lineup to face Morocco — the idea is clear.”

The one uncertainty is right-back; Wesley França was forced off the Egypt pitch in tears, and Danilo is the likely replacement. Neymar’s availability will be determined by a June 12 MRI scan; his most realistic group-stage debut remains the June 19 Haiti game or the June 24 Scotland game rather than June 13.

Is Julio Enciso fit for Paraguay’s World Cup opener?

Unknown. Enciso, 21, left Paraguay’s June 5 friendly against Nicaragua at the 24th minute clutching his right leg and reportedly in tears.

Tests have not returned a definitive diagnosis; World Soccer Talk described the injury as potentially “a tear or just a knock.” Paraguay open Group D on June 12 against the United States at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood at 9pm ET. If Enciso is unavailable, Paraguay lose their most creative and technically accomplished attacking midfielder ahead of their debut World Cup match, which is already the toughest possible opening fixture — against the host nation.
