The Copa Libertadores Round of 16 is ten weeks away, and the eight ties drawn in Luque on May 29 are beginning to crystallise into the summer’s defining CONMEBOL storylines.

Six Brazilian clubs are in the bracket: Flamengo, Palmeiras, Fluminense, Cruzeiro, Corinthians, and Mirassol, and the fixture that most captures the tournament’s character is a first-time Libertadores participant from the Brasileirão relegation zone against an Ecuadorian club that beat them 2-0 at altitude during the group stage.

Meanwhile, Brazil and Morocco are preparing for their June 13 Group C opener while training in the same town: Brazil at Columbia Park in Morris Township, Morocco at The Pingry School in Basking Ridge, a 15-minute drive apart, the most concentrated pre-tournament rivalry setup in the tournament.

In the Copa Sudamericana, Boca Juniors begin their redemption road against O’Higgins, and Vasco da Gama, six consecutive league defeats and in the relegation zone, face Independiente Medellín in a playoff tie that will tell us whether the Copa Sudamericana is a lifeline or a burden for the Cruz-Maltino.

And in San Antonio on Wednesday night, the Knicks beat the Spurs 105-95 in NBA Finals Game 1 — one card below.

As always, The Rio Times covers Latin America’s full sports landscape.

Six Brazilian Clubs in the Copa Libertadores Round of 16: What Each Tie Means

Libertadores

All six Brazilian clubs that entered the Copa Libertadores group stage advanced (the first time since 2023), and the Round of 16 draw has given each of them a fixture with genuine drama.

The ties are played as two-legged affairs in August, with the group runner-up hosting the first leg and the group winner hosting the second.

Cruzeiro vs Flamengo (first leg: Mineirão, second leg: Maracanã)

The guaranteed all-Brazilian quarter-finalist tie is the headline matchup of the draw. Flamengo (Group A, 16 pts) are the defending champions; Cruzeiro (Group D, 11 pts) are a Fernando Diniz side with Matheus Pereira in career-best form.

These clubs last met in a CONMEBOL knockout in the 2013 Recopa Sudamericana, which Flamengo won on penalties. In the Brasileirão they are separated by just three points.

Palmeiras vs Cerro Porteño (first leg: Allianz Parque, second leg: La Nueva Olla)

Cerro Porteño beat Palmeiras in the group stage to take Group F, costing Abel Ferreira’s side the seeding. Palmeiras are CONMEBOL’s most consistent Brazilian club at this level, with 15 group-stage points.

The second leg at La Nueva Olla in Asunción is a legitimate trap game for the Paulistas.

Corinthians vs Rosario Central (first leg: Neo Química Arena, second leg: Gigante de Arroyito)

Di María’s final continental campaign meets a Corinthians side that was already through when they met in the group-stage dead rubber; the full-strength version of each side is a different proposition.

Rosario Central are the more dangerous side on paper; their home advantage in Rosario for the second leg is significant.

Fluminense vs Independiente Rivadavia (first leg: Maracanã, second leg: Estadio Malvinas Argentinas, Mendoza)

The 2023 Copa Libertadores champions against the competition’s most surprising group-stage performer: Rivadavia topped Group C on 12 points without losing, promoted from the Argentine second division. Their Mendoza stadium at 762m above sea level is not Quito, but it presents real challenges.

Fluminense enter with injury concerns; the second leg in Argentina will test whether their 2023 pedigree still holds.

Mirassol vs LDU Quito — see Card 02.

KEY STAT: Six Brazilian R16 clubs: Flamengo (16 pts, 1st), Palmeiras (15 pts, 2nd), Mirassol (14 pts, 1st), Cruzeiro (11 pts, 2nd), Corinthians (11 pts, 1st), Fluminense (10 pts, 2nd). First legs August 11-13; second legs August 18-20. Quarter-final first legs September 8-10. Final: November 28, Estadio Centenario, Montevideo.

Mirassol vs LDU Quito: A Relegation Club, 2,850 Metres, and the Tie Nobody Wanted to Draw

Analysis

Mirassol went unbeaten through six Copa Libertadores group-stage games (four wins, two draws) and finished Group G in first place on 14 points.

They are also 18th in the Brasileirão, with 19 points from 18 games, three above the relegation line.

Their Round of 16 opponents, LDU Quito, finished second in Group G on 10 points, four behind Mirassol, but beat them 2-0 in Quito during matchday 2 of the group stage.

That first-leg result is the central fact of this tie: the away first leg goes back to the Estadio Casa Blanca at 2,850 metres above sea level, the same altitude where LDU already proved they can neutralise Mirassol’s pressing system.

Brazilian clubs have won just twice in ten Copa Libertadores away trips to Quito’s high-altitude venues in the last decade.

For a club with Mirassol’s squad depth, arriving five or six days early for altitude acclimatisation (the standard protocol) would represent a significant logistical and financial commitment.

The Brasileirão pause ends July 22, and the first leg is August 11-13.

By then, Mirassol will have played several league rounds in late July and early August with no knowledge of whether they are safe or still fighting relegation.

If they are safe, they can afford to rotate and focus on Quito.

If they are still in the Z4, coach Rafael Guanaes faces the most difficult squad management call of his career.

The tactical case for Mirassol is real: their pressing system is explosive and short-lived by design, not the oxygen-hungry positional play that altitude punishes most.

But the second leg in São Paulo, where Mirassol host as group winners, suits them perfectly; their unbeaten group-stage run shows they can defend leads under pressure at home.

KEY STAT: Mirassol group stage: 4W-2D-0L, 14 pts, Group G winners. LDU beat Mirassol 2-0 in Quito on matchday 2. Estadio Casa Blanca altitude: ~2,850m. Mirassol Brasileirão position entering pause: 18th (19 pts, 3 above Z4). Brazilian clubs in Copa Libertadores away games in Quito (last decade): W2 D3 L5. First leg in Quito: August 11-13. Second leg in São Paulo: August 18-20.

Boca’s Road Back, Vasco’s Crisis, Santos’s Clean Sheet: The Copa Sudamericana Playoff Ties in Full

Sudamericana

The Copa Sudamericana playoff round (first legs July 21-23, second legs July 28-30) pairs eight Copa Sudamericana group runners-up against eight third-placed Copa Libertadores clubs.

Three ties stand out for their LatAm narrative weight.

Boca Juniors vs O’Higgins (Chile)

Boca’s Copa Libertadores elimination at the Bombonera (0-1 to Universidad Católica on May 28) was described in Clarín as “La Pesadilla en la Bombonera” (the nightmare), and by former players as a “vergüenza histórica.” Now the six-time Libertadores champions must beat a Chilean club just to reach the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16.

O’Higgins are organised and dangerous on transitions; they finished third in their Libertadores group by defeating stronger opponents. If Boca have not resolved the dressing-room frustration from that Bombonera night, this tie will expose it.

Vasco da Gama vs Independiente Medellín

Vasco enter this tie having lost six consecutive Brasileirão games, sitting deepest in the Z4 on 14 points. Medellín were Copa Libertadores Group A runners-up until Estudiantes beat them 1-0 on the final matchday and dropped them into this playoff.

The first leg is at São Januário, where 40,000 supporters will either galvanise the Cruz-Maltino or express their mounting impatience. For Vasco, this tie must be won.

A Copa Sudamericana run is only an asset if they are good enough to advance; a group-stage exit followed by league relegation would be catastrophic for the club.

Santos vs their playoff opponent

Santos finished Group D in second place on 7 points, beating Deportivo Cuenca 3-0 on the final matchday (Gabigol, an own goal, Bontempo’s chip). Their playoff opponent was not confirmed at the time of the draw.

Santos enter the summer having won three of their last four matches; Neymar’s World Cup fitness remains the dominant off-pitch storyline.

Other confirmed ties: Sporting Cristal vs Bragantino, Lanús vs Cienciano, Peñarol vs Bolívar.

Copa Sudamericana final: November 21, Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez, Barranquilla, Colombia.

KEY STAT: Playoff first legs: July 21-23. Confirmed ties: Boca Juniors vs O’Higgins; Vasco vs Independiente Medellín (Vasco: 14 pts, Z4, 6 consecutive defeats); Santos vs TBD; Sporting Cristal vs Bragantino; Lanús vs Cienciano; Peñarol vs Bolívar. Copa Sudamericana final: November 21, Barranquilla.

15 Minutes Apart: Brazil and Morocco Are Preparing for June 13 in the Same New Jersey Town

Brazil WC

Brazil train at Columbia Park Training Facility in Morris Township and stay at The Ridge Hotel in Basking Ridge.

Morocco train at The Pingry School in Basking Ridge, the same town as Brazil’s hotel, and stay at the Somerset Hills Hotel in Warren, five minutes from The Pingry School.

The two Group C opponents who meet on June 13 at New York-New Jersey Stadium are essentially neighbours for the next ten days.

The Pingry School served as an international football base in 1994 when the United States last hosted the World Cup; it has since been renovated with two FIFA-standard pitches and a full athletics centre.

Morocco, ranked 12th in the world and the first African side to reach a World Cup semi-final (2022), are the most difficult first opponent Brazil could have drawn.

Their defensive organisation under Mohamed Ouahbi has conceded an average of 0.7 goals per game across the last two calendar years of competitive football.

Brazil’s Wednesday session at Columbia Park was again closed to the public and press.

Neymar continues his individual rehabilitation programme alongside the squad; his Grade 2 calf tear means he will not join contact training before June 10 at the earliest.

Ancelotti’s press conference at Columbia Park is scheduled for this morning, Thursday June 4.

It will be the first formal media briefing since the squad arrived in the United States, and the question of the Morocco lineup will dominate.

KEY STAT: Brazil base: Columbia Park, Morris Township (training) / The Ridge Hotel, Basking Ridge (accommodation). Morocco base: The Pingry School, Basking Ridge (training) / Somerset Hills Hotel, Warren (accommodation). Distance between training sites: ~15 minutes. Group C opener: June 13, New York-New Jersey Stadium, 6:00 PM ET. Ancelotti press conference: Thursday June 4, ~10:00 AM ET, Columbia Park. Egypt friendly: June 6, Cleveland, 6:00 PM ET.

Eight Days to Kick-Off: Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay and Paraguay All in Camp

World Cup

The World Cup opens in eight days: Mexico vs South Africa at Estadio Azteca on June 11, and the four South American nations outside Brazil and Argentina are now assembled at their base camps.

Ecuador (Group E: Germany, Ivory Coast, Curaçao)

Based at the Columbus Crew Performance Centre in Columbus, Ohio. Willian Pacho arrived from Budapest with two Champions League winner’s medals before his 24th birthday; Moisés Caicedo (Chelsea) anchors the midfield.

The group opener against Ivory Coast on June 14 at Estadio Azteca will set the tone. A win keeps the Round of 32 path open; a defeat in a group with Germany makes qualification significantly harder.

Colombia (Group K: Portugal, DR Congo, Uzbekistan)

Based at the Atlas AGA Academy in Guadalajara. Luis Díaz (Bayern Munich) leads a forward line that includes Cucho Hernández and Jhon Córdoba.

Colombia’s group is the most navigable for any South American nation: Uzbekistan and DR Congo are beatable, and a loss to Portugal can be survived if the first two games are won. James Rodríguez, 34 and on his third World Cup, opens against Uzbekistan on June 17 at Estadio Azteca.

Uruguay (Group H: Spain, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia)

Based at Mayakoba Training Center in the Riviera Maya. Darwin Núñez leads the attack under Marcelo Bielsa, whose intense preparation sessions are already generating coverage in Uruguay.

Spain are heavy Group H favourites; Uruguay’s path runs through beating Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia in the first two games. The opener against Saudi Arabia is June 15 in Miami.

Paraguay (Group D: USA, Australia, Türkiye)

Based at Spartan Soccer Complex in San Jose, California. Paraguay debut under Daniel Garnero, who also guided Universidad Católica’s Copa Libertadores shock this season.

The opener against the host USA on June 15 in Kansas City is the biggest match in Paraguayan football in recent memory. A draw would be a historic result.

KEY STAT: WC opens June 11: Mexico vs South Africa, Estadio Azteca. Ecuador opener: June 14 vs Ivory Coast, Estadio Azteca. Colombia opener: June 17 vs Uzbekistan, Estadio Azteca. Uruguay opener: June 15 vs Saudi Arabia, Miami. Paraguay opener: June 15 vs USA, Kansas City. Argentina opener: June 16 vs Algeria, Atlanta. Brazil opener: June 13 vs Morocco, New York-New Jersey Stadium.

NBA Finals: Knicks Steal Game 1 in San Antonio, 105-95; Game 2 Tonight

NBA

Jalen Brunson scored 30 points (13 in the fourth quarter) to give the New York Knicks a 105-95 road win in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday night at the Frost Bank Center.

Brunson twice left the game with injury scares (right knee, then left ankle) but returned both times; Karl-Anthony Towns added 18 points and 12 rebounds; Josh Hart collected 15 rebounds.

Victor Wembanyama had 26 points and 12 rebounds but shot 6-of-21 from the field and turned the ball over six times, an uncharacteristically poor offensive night that he attributed to “bad” play in his own post-game assessment.

De’Aaron Fox scored 7 points, visibly limited by the right ankle sprain that has persisted since the second round of the playoffs.

The Spurs led by 14 in the third quarter before the Knicks’ defence clamped down and Brunson took over in the fourth.

Game 2 is tonight in San Antonio at 8:30 PM ET on ABC; Wembanyama’s ankle and Fox’s health are the primary storylines entering the game.

KEY STAT: Knicks 105-95 Spurs. Brunson 30 (13 Q4, two injury scares). Towns 18/12. Wembanyama 26/12 but 6-21 FG, 6 TO. Fox 7 pts. Spurs led by 14 in Q3. Knicks: 12 straight playoff wins; only the 1999 Spurs and 2015 Warriors have done the same. Game 2: tonight, 8:30 PM ET, Frost Bank Center, ABC. Knicks lead series 1-0.
