Defending Christianity: The Battle for Religious Freedom in Europe and North America

Western countries face mounting pressure to protect religious freedom as intolerance grows, particularly against those with traditional views on marriage and sexuality.

A recent gathering in Berlin highlighted these concerns, drawing experts from around the globe. They warned that Europe and North America are seeing increased hostility towards people of faith.

Anja Hoffmann, executive director of the Observatory on Intolerance Against Christians in Europe, noted that many believers feel forced to hide their beliefs.

She emphasized that expressing religious views on marriage and family can jeopardize careers or lead to legal challenges. This climate of fear results in widespread self-censorship among traditional believers.

The Berlin meeting occurred alongside the 2024 International Ministerial Conference on Freedom of Religion or Belief.

Representatives from 38 member states of the International Religious Freedom or Belief Alliance (IRFBA), including the UK, US, Australia, the Netherlands, and Germany, attended the event.

Concerns Over Religious Freedom in Western Democracies

The fringe meeting was co-organized by several groups, including the Commission of the Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union and the Religious Freedom Institute in Washington, DC.

Participants expressed concern that religious believers in the West face marginalization and prosecution for peacefully expressing their convictions. They stressed that this issue threatens the pluralistic nature of Western democracies.

Dr. José Luis Bazán of COMECE described this phenomenon as “polite persecution,” a term used by Pope Francis. He explained that policies and social pressures undermine Christians’ ability to live according to their beliefs.

Marcela Szymanski from Aid to the Church in Need highlighted another issue: Western nations imposing liberal ideologies on Global South countries.

In addition, these nations may face material consequences if they adopt measures contrary to Western beliefs or reject ideological conditions.

Organizers submitted a declaration urging IRFBA member states to affirm religious freedom for all, including those with traditional views on marriage and family.

Todd Huizinga from the Religious Freedom Institute expressed hope that this statement could enhance mutual understanding. He believes it may also promote peace in pluralistic societies.

Addressing Religious Intolerance

David Trimble, president of the Religious Freedom Institute, warned against efforts to marginalize fundamental truths about God, family, and human sexuality. He stressed that true religious freedom requires acknowledging these enduring truths.

Reports indicate a rise in violence against Christians in Europe. The Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians in Europe reported a 44% increase in hate crimes against Christians.

This includes attacks on churches and personal assaults. Additionally, a Family Research Council report identified numerous incidents where Western governments undermined religious freedom through prosecution or punishment based on religious beliefs.

These developments underscore the urgent need for Western nations to address religious intolerance. They also highlight the importance of protecting individuals’ rights to express their beliefs freely.
