Colombian Talks with ELN: Unnecessary Crises

The Colombian government declared on Wednesday that the ELN’s choice to pause peace talks brings needless trouble. This decision harms the peace process.

The government said the ELN alone causes these problems. Their actions stretch out armed conflicts and hurt communities. They also lower trust in peace efforts.

On February 19, the ELN shared they would stop talks. They blamed the government for breaking agreements.

They criticized a separate dialogue in Nariño, claiming it ignored their team.

The government replied, stressing its full commitment from the start. It promised to keep seeking peace through discussion.

Officials explained that Nariño’s regional talks aim to safeguard civilians. These do not interfere with national discussions.

The government prioritizes peace in areas. It backs local efforts to protect people and make social changes.

The delegation noted the ELN should recognize the process’s progress. It should see both sides’ efforts and seek a peace that people in the areas want.

Talks with the ELN began in 2017 under President Santos but paused in 2019 after an ELN attack. President Petro resumed these talks in 2022.

They have moved forward with help from the global community, notably Venezuela, Cuba, and Mexico.

This situation shows the challenges in achieving peace. Each side’s actions and decisions are crucial.

They affect trust, ongoing conflicts, and the well-being of communities.  The international support highlights the global interest in Colombia’s stability and peace.
