Key Facts

  • The S&P IPSA, Santiago’s main stock index, closed 0.11% higher at 11,269 points clinging to a narrow gain despite a softening Chilean peso.
  • The Chilean peso, USD/CLP, weakened 0.50% to 917.27 per dollar slipping against a slightly firmer US currency bucket measured by the DXY index.
  • Lithium producer SQM-B was the session’s most-traded name, adding 1.8% on turnover of $17 million after the government capitalised Codelco’s retained profits from their lithium partnership.
  • Heavyweight bank BSantander jumped 2.0% providing ballast for the index and offsetting a 3.9% slide in regional airline LTM.
  • The IPSA sits 3.1% below its 52-week high of 11,628 points but comfortably above its year-low, reflecting a market consolidating near the top of its range.

Today’s Focus

Chilean equities managed a modest gain on Monday, even as the peso weakened and global cues were mixed. The S&P IPSA—the benchmark that tracks the 30 most actively traded shares on the Santiago exchange—rose 0.11% to 11,268.86 points.

Lithium miner SQM-B led the charge with a 1.8% gain on the back of news that the state is bolstering Codelco’s balance sheet in connection with their joint lithium venture. The peso, meanwhile, slipped 0.50% to 917.27 per dollar.

What matters today. A positive nudge from the lithium sector helped the local bourse look past a weaker currency and a sluggish day for regional retailers.

01 The session in one read

S&P IPSA daily candlestick chart

The Santiago Stock Exchange opened the week with a delicate balancing act. Chile’s S&P IPSA index—the barometer for the country’s largest and most liquid shares—managed a fractional rise of 0.11% to settle at 11,268.86 points.

Two very different forces shaped the session. On one side, lithium miner SQM-B and bank BSantander carried the index higher. On the other, the Chilean peso lost ground against the dollar, and consumer-facing stocks like Falabella and regional airline LTM sagged, keeping the overall gain in check.

Assessment — Consolidating near the peak MEDIUM

The session lacked a powerful directional push, but the internal dynamics were more constructive than the tiny 0.11% index move suggests. Heavy buying in SQM (lithium) and BSantander (banking) was partially neutralised by profit-taking in consumer names like Falabella and a rout in airline LTM. The peso’s 0.50% decline is worth monitoring—if it breaks above 920, it could signal short-term pressure. For now, the market’s tone remains one of cautious accumulation just below its record levels.

02 The day’s numbers

Measure Level Change Read
S&P IPSA 11,269 +0.11% Range-bound consolidation, 3.1% below the 52-week high of 11,628.
USD/CLP (Chilean peso) 917.27 +0.50% Peso weakened; the rate is 5.8% below its 52-week high of 973.62.
S&P 500 (US benchmark) 7,753 −0.06% A flat US session offered little direction for emerging markets.
VIX (Wall Street fear gauge) 15.46 +3.76% A slight uptick in caution stateside, though the level remains low.
Copper (LME spot) Copper dominates Chilean trade but an exact session close was not verified.

The IPSA’s 52-week range stretches from a low of 8,195 points to a high of 11,628. Monday’s close leaves the market in a high-but-stalling zone, digesting strong prior gains.

The peso had a shakier day. At 917.27 per dollar, the Chilean currency is testing the upper boundary of its recent comfort zone, a move that often raises the cost of imported goods and can nudge the central bank to sound more hawkish.

The session read
The S&P IPSA eased 1.13%, with breadth negative — 2 of 11 names higher. Utilities led, while Consumer Staples lagged.

03 Why it moved — lithium clarity and retail caution

The session’s main spark came from the lithium patch. Local press reported that Chile’s government will not withdraw Codelco’s 2025 profits, which totalled US$2.42 billion. Most of that sum—roughly US$2 billion—comes from an accounting recognition tied to Novandino Litio, the state copper giant’s joint venture with SQM.

Analysts told La Tercera that the move improves Codelco’s debt-to-equity ratio, even though it does not inject fresh cash. For SQM, the signal is crucial: it confirms the state is standing firmly behind the partnership, reducing the political risk that has long hung over lithium extraction in Chile’s Atacama salt flat.

Meanwhile, domestic demand-side signals were mixed. Data showed job offers in Chile fell for a ninth straight month in July, with the central bank’s index dropping 10.5% year-on-year. This lingering labour-market softness weighed on the retail sector, helping explain why Falabella and Cencosud failed to join the broader rally.

04 The day’s movers

Driver Level / Move Change Note
SQM-B (Lithium miner) $17m turnover +1.8% Session’s most-traded stock; lifted by Codelco lithium profit retention news.
LTM (LATAM Airlines) $17m turnover −3.9% The heaviest drag among actives, though turnover matched SQM.
BSantander (Banking) +2.0% Second-best index gainer; part of a broader bank sector uptick.
Schwager (Engineering) +10.6% Session’s biggest overall gainer on unusually sharp, low-volume buying.
Falabella (Retail) $5m turnover −0.5% Dip reflected the weak labour-market report that dented consumer sentiment.

The movers list paints a market of strong individual stories. SQM and LTM both traded $17 million, but in opposite directions. Institutional money appeared to rotate into resources and away from consumer cyclicals.

The 10.6% leap in Schwager, a far smaller engineering services firm, looks like a low-volume breakout rather than a fundamental shift. Investors should note such moves while focusing their analysis on the heavyweight banks and commodity names where conviction was clearer.

05 The regional scoreboard

Index Country Change
Ibovespa Brazil −0.19%
IPC Mexico −0.75%
Merval Argentina +1.14%
COLCAP Colombia +0.94%
BVL Perú Peru +0.19%

A mixed session across Latin America. Argentina’s Merval rallied more than 1% in local terms, while Mexico’s IPC fell hardest. Chile’s flat-to-positive finish placed it in the middle of the regional pack.

With no overriding global macro catalyst, each market traded on its own domestic narrative. For Chile, that meant lithium politics trumped mild US caution.

06 The technical picture

The IPSA is trading within a consolidative wedge just below its record territory. Holding above the 11,200 handle keeps the short-term trend constructive, but the index has not mustered enough momentum to test its 52-week high of 11,628 points.

On the currency side, the peso’s weakening to 917.27 brings the 920 level into view as a psychological trigger. A daily close above that mark could open a path toward the 930 handle, which might start to weigh on dollar-sensitive stocks. The key variable remains copper—a sustained bid for the red metal would likely settle both the index and the peso firmly higher.

07 What to watch

  • Central bank minutes: Chile releases the minutes of its July monetary policy meeting on Tuesday; any hawkish tilt could support the peso and cap the IPSA’s rally.
  • Copper prices: The red metal failed to offer a clear lead on Monday; a break higher would likely pull the IPSA above its current consolidation range.
  • US inflation data: Wednesday’s US CPI print is the global macro highlight. A soft number could lift emerging-market assets, including Chilean equities, by reducing US rate expectations.
  • SQM lithium deal follow-through: Any formal statement from Codelco or the government on the Novandino structure will drive further rotation into lithium names.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the S&P IPSA?

It is Chile’s main stock index, tracking the 30 most actively traded shares on the Santiago exchange. It acts as the pulse of the country’s large corporate sector.

Why did the Chilean peso weaken?

The peso slipped 0.50% to 917.27 per dollar. A slightly firmer US dollar globally and some domestic caution ahead of central bank minutes contributed to the move.

What moved SQM shares?

SQM-B rose 1.8% after local media reported the government will retain Codelco’s 2025 profits. Since US$2 billion of those profits come from the Codelco–SQM lithium venture, the news confirmed state backing for the partnership.

Is the Chilean market expensive?

At 11,269 points, the IPSA is 3.1% below its 52-week high of 11,628 points. It is not at a peak, but it is trading in the higher end of its recent range.
