Rio Wins 2025 World Book Capital Title

On World Book Day, Mayor Eduardo Paes announced that UNESCO named Rio de Janeiro the World Book Capital for 2025.

He vows to initiate new reading programs.

Significantly, Rio becomes the first Portuguese-speaking city with this honor. The municipal government will now organize literature-focused events.

Starting next year, initial steps begin. Known institutions like the National Library reside in Rio.

Additionally, Culture Minister Marcelo Calero highlights Rio’s cultural importance. He points to the city’s extensive library system as a factor for selection.

Previous titleholders include cities like Guadalajara and Accra. The main goal is broad access to reading, particularly for young and at-risk groups.

Immediate Plans

On Thursday, a decree formed a special committee. This group will plan the book-related festivities.

Rio’s government plans to modernize its library system. They earmark over 16 million Reais for this project.

Furthermore, they aim to transform the Biennale into an immersive multimedia event.

Moreover, a “Book Parade” with art installations will occur. A special “Night of the Books” offers a 24-hour marathon of activities.

The “Books on Rails” program puts literature on public transit. Finally, a new “Junior Editorial Academy” will train aspiring publishers.

Background World Book Capital Title

This title boosts Rio’s image as a cultural nexus in Brazil. It serves as a significant addition to its well-known Carnival and music scenes.

Nationally, it raises the profile of Portuguese language and Brazilian literature. Moreover, the efforts to improve libraries can serve as a model for other Brazilian cities.

Globally, Rio’s honor resembles those of previous cities like Guadalajara and Accra. These cities too, like Rio, aimed to democratize reading.

But Rio’s diverse cultural backdrop adds a unique flavor. In summary, as cities worldwide strive for literacy, Rio takes a notable step, enriching both local and global communities.
