Brazil calls for federal police probe into nationwide power outages

The Brazilian government has called on the Federal Police to examine the reasons behind a widespread power outage that impacted most parts of the country, as stated by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira.

The blackout, the origins of which remain unclear, led to power disruptions in all Brazilian states except for Roraima in the north, Silveira detailed in a press conference.

He pinpointed two incidents that may have triggered the energy disruptions: one in the state of Ceará in the northeast and another in an undisclosed location.

The power system’s failure was first reported at 08:31 in the morning, and a full restoration, barring a few minor issues, was achieved by around 15:00, confirmed Silveira.

He emphasized no threat of an energy supply shortage and that the hydroelectric plants have adequate water reserves for standard operations.

Silveira, who accompanied Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Paraguay for Santiago Peña’s presidential inauguration, cut his visit short to oversee the situation in Brazil personally.
