Plan to create 2 million affordable homes in Brazil by 2026 underway

The government is spearheading a plan to facilitate the establishment of 2 million affordable homes by 2026, influenced by recent adjustments to the Minha Casa, Minha Vida program.

These adjustments, including a reduction in interest rates and an increase in subsidies, were approved on July 13, 2023.

Minister Jader Filho believes that rejuvenating the social housing project ‘Minha Casa, Minha Vida’ will stimulate economic growth by creating over a million direct and indirect jobs within four years.

These developments are to be funded by the General Budget of the Union and the FGTS (Fund for Guaranteed Length of Service), facilitating the economic recovery of Brazil.

The program modifications emerged from dialogs with various stakeholders, including municipal governments, civil society organizations, and the private sector.

The intention was to fine-tune the program to align with regional realities.

Minister Filho disclosed that future properties would be constructed in proximity to amenities like schools, healthcare facilities, and commercial centers.

Another change involves increasing the subsidy for down payments on properties financed with FGTS resources from R$47,500 to R$55,000, particularly benefiting residents of the North and Northeast regions.

An ongoing discussion is the potential expansion of the program to cater to the middle class, with the existing Minha Casa, Minha Vida scheme catering to families earning up to R$8,000 monthly.

Minister Filho concluded by emphasizing the significance of public and private investment for advancing basic sanitation in the country.
