Mato Grosso do Sul state is leading Brazil in agricultural and cattle raising development

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Mato Grosso do Sul is the first in agricultural and cattle raising development among the states in Brazil, a study by the National Confederation of Municipalities (CNM) shows, which prepared the Index of Municipal Agricultural Development (Idam).

The index serves to support managers in the planning and organization of municipal actions to encourage the development of rural production. The study points out that in 2021, the state had an index of 0.6941 (on a scale of zero to 1), followed by Mato Grosso, with 0.6652, and Paraná, with 0.5926.

The survey shows that among the 20 largest agribusinesses in the country, there are four cities in Mato Grosso do Sul: Maracaju, which leads the state ranking and is eighth nationally, with an index of 0.9375; followed by Sidrolândia, with 0.9272, 12th in Brazil; Rio Brilhante, with 0.9248, occupying the 13th national position; and fourth in the state and 17th nationally, Chapadão do Sul, with an IDAM index of 0.9209.

Among the 100 largest agro cities in the country, Mato Grosso do Sul has 13 municipalities.

IDAM considers the growth of rural production, the generation of jobs and agribusinesses, investment, and municipal revenue, differentiating it from the PAM (Municipal Agricultural Production) ranking, which is prepared by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), which uses other criteria.

According to PAM-IBGE, Maracaju ranks 14th, Sidrolândia 18th, and Ponta Porã 20th.

According to the technical studies area of CNM, 39% of the 5,568 municipalities have IDAM index up to 0.2; other 12% between 0.2 and 0.4; 30% between 0.4 and 0.6; 17% between 0.6 and 0.8 and 2% above 0.8.

In the state, the number of cities with an index above 0.8 is almost 20%, totaling 14 locations. Another 42 cities are between 0.6 and 0.8, corresponding to 53% of the 79 cities.

In the ranking of the states, Mato Grosso do Sul leads the IDAM ranking, with an index of 0.6941, followed by Mato Grosso with 0.6652, Paraná with 0.5926, Goiás with 0.5619, Rio Grande do Sul with 0.5306, and São Paulo with 0.5193.

The study points out that Brazilian agriculture and cattle-raising last year reached a gross production value of R$1.12 trillion (US$210 billion), generating income for the producer and moving the local commerce.

According to CNM, agribusiness positively impacts the Brazilian trade balance and represents 23% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The sector’s importance represents 17.1% of the entire state GDP, which was R$106 billion in the last IBGE survey (2019).
